I NEED HELP WITH MY STATISTIC CLASS ASAP PLEASE!!
Moe_99Statistics Final Spring 2016 Name______________________
Graves 195 pts DUE:
No late paper will be accepted. (You may turn in the work early.)
· You must show your work using Excel and/or Statdisk.
· You work MUST be neat and READABLE and in order. I will not hunt for the answers! Insert symbols for the mean, proportion and standard deviation when appropriate. You work must be typed – no written work will be allowed.
· Using WORD, answer the following questions – Open this WORD file from Blackboard and type your answers following each question. You may use either Excel or Statdisk to run the analysis but you must copy/paste the needed analysis into WORD and then explain or discuss your conclusions. Turn in your completed WORD document: physically turn in to me by the due date OR you may turn in the WORD document through Blackboard.
· If the student does not do some of this work in the lab time provided, the instructor may ask for a one-on-one meeting for the student to explain the processes that were taken to complete this project.
The data that will be used for this project is the average monthly minimum and maximum temperatures for five town in Missouri retrieved from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov . Each town has 51 years of temperature data for each the min and max values. If a temperature value is listed at -999, this represents NO data for that town/month. This data is available in Blackboard under Final Project tab.
Part A: (5pts) Select two towns and from each town, select the same one month. Avoid the months that have missing data (-999 temperature). List the two towns and the single month that you have selected below:
Part B: Copy your selected towns/month temperature data into the Excel Worksheet titled YOUR STATS. From each town, copy the Min and the Max Temps into Excel for the month you have selected. Using the Formatting commands, format the temperatures to whole numbers.
1. In Excel, find the mean, standard deviation, variance, median, min, max and the range for:
· Town 1 using Month’s Min Temperatures
· Town 1 using Month’s Max Temperatures
· Town 2 using Month’s Min Temperatures
· Town 2 using Month’s Max Temperatures
Use the following formulas in Excel:
Mean =average(…)
… indicates that you may use your mouse to highlight the data for which you need to find the statistic from
Standard deviation =stdev(…)
Variance =var(…)
Median =median(…)
Min =min(…)
Max =max(…)
2. (24pts) Copy and Paste this information from Excel below. Make sure the data is labeled appropriately.
3. (12pts) In Excel, construct four (4) frequency tables with 5 classes;
· Town 1 using Month’s Min Temperatures
· Town 1 using Month’s Max Temperatures
· Town 2 using Month’s Min Temperatures
· Town 2 using Month’s Max Temperatures
Please label the four frequency tables in Excel before you copy and paste them below. Make sure that the labels are included on each of the tables that you paste below. (Note: when you divide the range/(#classes), round that value up to whole number to create your classes. An additional class may be created, which is OK.)
4. Using Excel, construct four (4) histograms for the four frequency tables you created in step 1 using Excel. Label the histogram graphs appropriately.
a. (12pts) Copy and Paste these graphs below.
b. (3pts) Do the graphs indicate that the data values come from a normal distribution? Why or why not?
c. (3pts) Do the Min Temperatures from the two different towns seem to be similar? Why or why not?
d. (3pts) Do the Max Temperatures from the two different towns seem to be similar? Why or why not?
5. Using Statdisk, create a Modified Boxplot for the Max Temperatures for Town 1 and the Max Temperatures for Town 2. After you paste the Temperatures into Statdisk, select Data/Boxplots/columns for Max temps for town 1 & 2/Modified Boxplots.
a. (5pts) Copy and paste the Boxplot below:
b. (5pts) Discuss what these Boxplots are showing you. (Discuss questions such as: Did the two towns seem to have the same max temps? What about the spread of the temperatures? Evenly spread out or not? Why/why not? Were there any outliers? The * would represent an outlier. What does this outlier (if you have any) tell you?)
6. Using Statdisk, construct a 95% confidence interval for the mean for the Min temperatures for Town 1 you used in step 1.
a. (5pts) Copy and Paste this CI below:
b. (4pts) Explain what this confidence interval is telling you.
7. Using Statdisk, construct a 95% confidence interval for the mean for the Min temperatures for Town 2 you used in step 2.
a. (5pts) Copy and Paste below this CI below:
b. (4pts) Explain what this confidence interval is telling you.
8. (5pts) Now looking at the two 95% CI you created in the two steps above would you say that the minimum average temperature is the same for each of the two towns? Why or why not? Explain.
9. (4pts) Using Excel and for your Town 1 Min Temperatures, group the data into two groups: Group 1 will be the first 25 years of Min Temps and Group 2 will be the last 25 years of Min Temps. (There will be one year – the middle year – left out of these data sets.) Find the Mean and standard deviation for each group. State this information below:
10.
(5pts) Hypothesis:
Claim:
Ho:
H1:
(5pts) Statdisk Information:
(5pts) Conclusions:
(4pts) Discuss: If you conclude that the mean temps are different for the first 25 years and the last 25 years, why do you think this is the case? How are they different? Which is warmer or colder?
11. Do the same as steps above on the Max Temps from your Town1. That is, using Statdisk, test the claim that the Max Temps for the years 1965-1989 is the same for the years 1991-2015. Complete the following information using Statdisk.
12. Look at Neosho Min & Max Temperatures for the month of July.
a. (5pts) Calculate the mean and standard deviation for the max temperatures in July. Make sure to delete the -999 values before calculating the mean & standard deviation. Give the results below:
b. (5pts) My daughter got married in the month of July and the temperature on the day of her wedding was 107o Fahrenheit.
i. Calculate the z-score for this 107 temperature.
ii. Would you say that the temperature on her wedding day was unusually hot? Why or why not?
c. (5pts) Calculate the correlation coefficient r for the Min Temps and Max Temps. (Let x=Min Temps and y=Max Temps.) From Statdisk, state the r-value and the CV’s and also paste the Scatterplot below.
d. (5pts) Is there linear correlation between the Min Temps and Max Temps? Why or why not? How do you know this by looking at the r-value & CV’s AND by looking at the scatterplot?
e. (4pts) If there is linear correlation, find the regression equation: y=B0+B1x.
13. (5pts) Make a prediction: Using the information above for Neosho temperatures, if the Min Temp was 65o Fahrenheit, predict what you would expect the Max Temp to be for Neosho in July.
14. Test the claim that the Min Temps have the same standard deviation as the Max Temps for your Town 1. Let α=0.05. (Use Statdisk to conduct this hypothesis test. Make sure to complete the following information.)
(5pts) Hypothesis :
Claim:
Ho:
H1:
(5pts) Statdisk Information :
(5pts) Conclusions :
(4pts) Discussion: Why do you think you got the answer you did? That is, if the standard deviations are statistically equal, why do you think so and what is this telling you? If the standard deviations are statistically not equal, why do you think so and what is this telling you?
15. (5pts) In your own words, describe what a P-value is telling you when a hypothesis test is conducted.
16. (5pts) In your own words, describe what a standard deviation value is telling you about a given data set.
