In the mission statement for Facebook, they do not specifically mention sustainable business practices. For Facebook, it seems that they are trying to create the best website that they can. They feel that as long as they keep innovating, they will be a sustainable company. They are trying to reach more people and get them online using Facebook.
Facebook’s philosophy is to make the world more open and connected. It seems that they are succeeding in following their philosophy. They are creating new technology to make it easier for people to use Facebook and connect with their friends and family members. They have information on environmental sustainability, but it’s not located in their business plan, they have a Facebook page dedicated to informing the public about their environmental practices.
Facebook has a page on their website dedicated to sustainability at www.facebook.com/green . Users of Facebook can follow this page to receive updates about what Facebook is doing to be sustainable. They claim to have saved enough energy to power 40,000 homes in 2013. They also say that their carbon savings for the year is the equivalent to taking 50,000 cars off the road for an entire year. They are partnered with the Open Compute Project which is trying to find ways to make more efficient and less wasteful technology. On their page, Facebook is very detailed and lists how much energy they use from various sources, as well as information on their carbon footprint.
There are a few articles written about Facebook and sustainability. The newest one that I could find was written by Ben Kepes for Forbes and was published October 10th, 2014. This article talks about the criticism of data centres and their carbon footprint. He talks about how Facebook is committed to renewable energy, stating that two of their facilities are powered by 100% renewable energy, and they are working toward using renewable energy in more of their facilities. This article begins by criticising data centres which Facebook has many of, but finishes by praising Facebook for their innovation and commitment to sustainability.
Facebook is working on becoming more sustainable, they aren’t the most environmentally friendly company, but they are certainly working toward being as earth friendly as possible as they can be. They have partnered with and started many environmental organisations, including the Open Compute Project. They appear to be a sustainability driven company.
