• What are some of the purposes / functions of ritual/religious dancing?
• How do ethnic dance forms differ from social dance forms?
Social Dance• KNOW: • The different formations in social dances
• The significance of the circle formation in social dance
• The difference between social/folk dance and ethnic dance
• Social Dance reflects culture - What are some of the categories of classification for social dances (think of the dances we did in the social dance lab or were described to you on the PowerPoint presentation).
• What social dances do you do? What social/political aspects influence the kind of dancing you do?

Ancient Dance • KNOW:
• The characteristics of dance of Egyptians, Hebrews, Greeks, Romans - Who danced? Why and how did they use movement?
• Terminology: • (Kritikos, Terpsichore, Orchestra, Pyrrihic, Chorus,
Dionysus, etc.)
• Who does art serve and what is its value to society?
• How was danced used in Greek Theatre? In Roman Theatre?
• What characterized dance after the Fall of Rome?
Dance Concepts
• Where does movement as dance come from in social, ritual, and entertainment forms?
• What is your informed definition of dance? When is movement dance? When is it not Dance?
• What is the power of dance? How does it uniquely communicate?
• Dance forms: circle, line, procession.
• The study of dance: Anthropology, Ethnology, Ethnochoreology, Semasiology.

• The exam will be conducted online. You may use your text and additional notes while taking the exam.
