Introduction
In this lab I will label, define, and explain the ecology and physiology of these organisms. I will identify their significance in the environment, as well as clarify features which are used to categorize organisms into these groupings. Lastly, I will discuss why a particular organism is believed to be a Protostome or a Deuterostome.
Procedure
Exercise 1:Mollusca - The Mantled Invertebrates
1.From the How to Dissect book, read through Chapter 1 plus pages 51 through the top
paragraph of page 70 in Chapter 5 before proceeding with this exercise. Ensure that you
thoroughly understand what you will be doing before you begin.
2. Follow the instructions listed in How to Dissect pp. 51-70 of Chapter 5 to explore the anatomy
and physiology of the clam.
Exercise 2: The Segmented Worms
1. From How to Dissect, read from page 9 through the first several paragraphs of page 22 in
Chapter 2 of the book before proceeding with your investigation. Ensure that you thoroughly
understand what you will be doing before you begin.
2. Follow the instructions listed in How to Dissect, pp. 9-22 of Chapter 2 to explore the anatomy
and physiology of the earthworm.
Exercise 3: Arthropoda – The Jointed Animals with
Exoskeletons
1. From How to Dissect, read from page 37 through the top of page 47 in Chapter 4 of the book
before proceeding with your investigation. Ensure that you thoroughly understand what you
will be doing before you begin.
2. Follow the instructions listed in How to Dissect, pp. 37-47 of Chapter 4 to explore the anatomy
and physiology of the grasshopper.
Exercise 4: Class Insecta
1. Take a field trip around your neighborhood and attempt to find representatives of each of
these orders in nature.
2. Conduct an online search for more information on Insecta in general or specific species.

Lab Report Assistant
This document is not meant to be a substitute for a formal laboratory report. The Lab Report Assistant is simply a summary of the experiment’s questions, diagrams if needed, and data tables that should be addressed in a formal lab report. The intent is to facilitate students’ writing of lab reports by providing this information in an editable file which can be sent to an instructor.
