  1. List and describe five (5) musical elements, or particular stylistic aspects, characteristic of the Romantic era.
  2. Based on the textbook reading and the lecture, as well as your own research, how would you describe the role of women during the Romantic era? How is it different from the Classical era? How did the opportunities for women in music change in the Romantic period? Be sure to mention names of female musicians and composers.
  3. Refer to Chapter 40 - Listening Guide 31:

-After listening to Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel’s At the River, from The Year (Das Jahr), identify what best describes its texture, form, and expression.

  1. How did the physical (military) revolutions and the Industrial Revolution influence society, the music scene, and musical instruments in the 19th century?
  2. Refer to Chapter 39 – Listening Guide 30:

-After listening to Chopin’s Polonaise in A Major, Op. 40, No. 1 (Military), identify what best describes its rhythm/meter, harmony, and texture.

  1. Compare and contrast “program music” and “absolute music.” Give and describe specific musical examples. 
  2. Refer to Chapter 41 – Listening Guide 32:

-After listening to Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique, IV (March of the Scaffold), identify what best describes its melody, harmony, and expression.

  1. Why was opera an ideal vehicle for nationalism and exoticism? Give and describe specific musical examples. What innovations did Richard Wagner bring to the world of opera?
  2. Describe the original function of spirituals, as well as what happened to the music once it had been performed in concert. Do you think the songs are still “spirituals” in your opinion?
  • Make sure to use your own words when posting your responses. DO NOT simply rely on quotes of exact sentences or paragraphs from the textbook, but digest the information! 
  • Be sure to exercise your critical thinking skills and compose your responses using your own original style of writing.
  • Be sure to compose complete paragraphs developing your ideas and analysis. “One-word” or “one-sentence” answers will not be sufficient in this course.

~Compose a full paragraph for each of the three (3) compositions describing your impressions, analysis, thoughts, and ideas. Be sure to use musical terms, vocabulary, and concepts you have learned so far in this class.
