The movie “She’s the Man- I am Viola”

The portrayal of race, gender, and Romaic comedies can be easily identified in many movies and television series. In terms of gender, female characters have traditionally been underrepresented in prime-time programming compared to their actual numbers in the U.S. population (Glascock & Preston-Schreck, 2018). a romantic comedy is classified as a film with two genres, not a single new genre. Some television series can also be classified as romantic comedies. Some romantic comedies use reversal of gender roles to add comedic effect. these films contain characters who possess qualities that diverge from the gender role that society has imposed upon them such as the comedian movie “she’s the man”.

In this movie series and American romantic comedy sports film created in 2006. The film is centered on a teenager Viola Hastings, who enters her brother's new boarding school in his place where she is pretending to be a boy just to play on the boys’ soccer team. Viola covered for her brother on the team but had to pretend to be a male figure. Viola was excepted as a popular male player and begin to climb to the top of popularity.

What surprised me the most was once Sebastian announced that he was really a female (Viola), and no one would believe him, so they asked him to prove it by lifting his shirt. The players said that just showing she had long hair was not enough; because boys have long hair. I was very surprised by what she had to go through to be accepted to play on the team to become popular.

These stereotypes impact that has on society has impacted on what gender is accepted to play different sports. Many women like football but there are not many women’s pro football teams that make it to the NFL. In this video, she should have never been asked to lift her shirt to prove who she was on the soccer field.

To all the boys I’ve loved before is a romantic comedy based on a novel written by Jenny Han. The movie is based on a teenage girl who is 16 named Lara Jean Convey. Convey’s race is half white half Korean and so is her other two sisters. The gender in this movie is divided between male and female. The lead of course is female Lara Jean Convey. In this romancfic comedy Lara Jean keeps love letters to all the boys she has ever loved in a teal hatbox given to her by her late mother who died by a head injury when Lara Jean was just 9. Kitty her younger sister decides to take Lara Jeans hatbox and mail out all her letters to boys she’s loved throughout her life but never told them anything in hopes that Lara Jean would found true love. In the midst of her everyday life all the boys she wrote letters to received them and confronts Lara Jean one by one and some actually express their interest in her back but she denies them all except for one Peter Kavinsky. Lara Jean and Peter decide to embark on a fake relationship to help eachother out for their different situations and as they play along they fall in love and experience a a lot of obstacles making it work. However they truly do like eachother and embark on a relationship as the year ends... Then next a sequel comes called To all the boys I’ve loved before. P.S. I still love you!

The only thing that really surprised me in this movie was that Kitty, Lara Jeans sister actually went behind her sisters back and mailed out private love letters on her sisters behalf. If my sister had done something like that it probably would be a long time until I’ve talked to her lol.

The stereotype in this romantic comedy is the fact that the producers casted an actress that is of 100% Vietnamese descent to portray a half-Korean teen that reinforces the stereotype that “all Asians look the same”. Lara Jean Convey is Vietnamese in real life and here she is portraying that she is half Korean half white and it does not like right in the movie. You can definitely tel she is different from her sisters.

Over the year researchers have conducted extensive experimental studies on the negative stereotypes associated with Black Americans in particular.” Across 4 studies, we demonstrate that the physical spaces associated with Black Americans are also subject to negative racial stereotypes. Such spaces, for example, are perceived as impoverished, crime-ridden, and dirty.” (Bonam, C. M., Bergsieker, H. B., & Eberhardt, J. L.) The Wayans bothers, Keenen Ivory, Shawn, and Marlon, strategically depicted all three physical spaces in their 1996 release of, “Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood (or simply Don't be a Menace). Although the film is a comedy, it brings awareness to the perception of the day to day matters in African- American communities.

In the film, Ashtray, Tray for short, is sent to the inner city to live with his father. Although Tray has a relationship with his father, it was tainted. He was uneducated, unemployed, and lived with his mom. Society would have you believe this is the case for the majority of African American fathers and this stereotype could not be further than the truth. Consequently, the cases where the father is absent are usually reflected in the behavior of his children.

The film also shines light on African-American women being portrayed as promiscuous. Dashiki, mother of 6 kids by 6 different men, engages in sexual intercourse with Tray and immediately claims he has impregnated her. Feeling like he is not responsible enough to be the father, Tray tell Dashiki he’s not ready to be a father and she kicks him out.

The entire comedy is based on low-economic status stereotypes, the lower class. They live in crime-ridden community. There are liquor stores on the corner, drugs are sold freely on the streets, and generational barriers are not broken.

I am not surprised by the findings. It was the reality in 1996, and it stands true to be the reality today. The film brought awareness to many stereotypical myths about the black community and the Wayans brothers provided positive messages throughout the film to change the narrative. These stereotypes have had a negative impact of the black community and its everyday encounters with other races based upon the frequency of television programming. For that reason, the National Advancement for Colored People, the Black Panthers, and Black Lives Matter organizations exist.
