Assignment 2: Mid-Term Evaluation and Self-Assessment

Prior to your field education experience, you completed an agency learning agreement that outlined potential goals and objectives related to social work practice skills that you sought to acquire during this course.

Like a contract, your agency learning agreement also provided your field instructor a set of criteria that would measure your social work practice skills. For this course, you will undergo a formal evaluation of your social work practice skills.

As you engage in future field education experiences, you will be able to refine and hone the development of those skills.

For this Assignment, review your agency learning agreement and the results of your midterm evaluation. Consider how your field education experience fulfilled the goals and objectives in your agency learning agreement. Reflect on what you would like to gain in future field education experiences.

Note: You should receive your midterm evaluation from your field instructor.

The Assignment (4–5 pages):

  • Describe whether you met or did not meet the goals/objectives in your agency learning agreement and include the results from your evaluation.
  • Compare your learning agreement and your evaluation to critically consider how the two are compatible and how you may approach completing the learning agreement differently next term.
  • Describe the social work practice skills you developed.
  • Describe potential areas where you might need improvement in relation to social work practice skills, ethics, or professionalism.
  • Explain how your next field education experience might address those areas.
  • Explain how participation in this course might inform your future field courses, what will you do the same, what will you do differently.
  • Be sure to submit the results of your evaluation to this assignment.

Wow, there definitely times I didn't know if I was going to make it, with a very demanding full time job, raising a teenager of my own and trying to complete my learning agreement were stressful at times to say the least. But I made it!! I have gained so much knowledge and hands on experience in this past 11 weeks. I have grown as a professional and person. I was able to at least experience every aspect on my learning agreement. I know there were some things that I need more exposure too. But I was able to display ethical professionalism, work with diverse population, complete individual, group and family sessions with a diverse population.

After reviewing my field instructors evaluation, I honestly feel that she may have graded me too high, I received mostly 4's, some 5's and one 3. Even with these scores I know there so much more for me to learn and ways in which I can improve. I am eager to continue my work with this agency and learn more.

Social workers acquire many skills needed to play various social work roles, develop competence at all levels of practice, and design interventions based on a broad range of perspectives, theories, and models (Garthwait, 2017). I was able to experience many things at my internship, I was able to apply so much of my book knowledge to real life experience, and there were some things that I did not expect. Overall I had an amazing experience even thought it was challenging.

Response 2

An explanation of the completion of your agency learning agreement, including a summary of the results of your evaluation

The completion of the agency learning agreement has prompted a focus to learn and understand the following:

1. Ethical and professional behavior

  • Maintaining Confidentiality

2. Engaging within a diverse population

  • Creating a safety plan

3. Advancing human rights and social, economic and environmental justice

  • Understanding policy of social work context

In addition, the learning agreement has presented an evaluation of what I’ve fulfilled and what I need to work on within social work practice. After reviewing this evaluation, I recognized that I’ve done a pretty good job. However, I always think of how I can do better. Garthwait (2017) references that “ competence as a practicum student is developed over time when classroom knowledge and practicum experiences are integrated through real social work experiences. ( p. 173) The field instructor has rated the performance during this internship as very good. He has commented that I’ve gained more confidence and I definitely agree. Throughout the internship, I’ve noticed that questions asked by clients are similar but vary. Therefore, when I was unable to answer the question, I became frightened and nervous that staff was unavailable to help answer the question. I know have developed a resource and learned to locate answers independently. I hope to have an ongoing development of skills to become an even better social worker.

The completion of my agency learning agreement is bittersweet, this opportunity allowed me to work in a professional setting as I developed and demonstrated my social work skills. Within my agency learning agreement, I had the opportunity to work with a group of great therapists who also taught me how to develop professional relationships within the community to better understand the local resources in the area that would benefit the client we services and our future client.

I was worried about my evaluation due to me becoming sick in the beginning of the semester and started to have a lot of tests done. I was also a little shy and nervous. However, once I completed my 1st Biopsychosocial I became more comfortable. After my first supervision with my supervisor, she told me I did really well on that patient’s Bio. The result of my evaluation was great for just being there for only the 1st semester. I’m looking forward to learning and doing much more next semester. The highest of the evaluation is a 5 and I received all 4’s. So, I was pleased. Looking forward to next semester.
