VIDEO CONCERT REPORT ASSIGNMENT GUIDE:
Complete the Video Concert Report using:
MICROSOFT WORD ONLY.
TYPE USING 12 POINT FONT AND THE “NORMAL” SETTING.
THIS RESETS DEFAULT SPACING AND MARGINS.
IT WILL BE VERY CLOSE TO SINGLE SPACING.
THE REPORT SHOULD BE THREE (3) FULL PAGES LONG
EMAIL A MICROSOFT WORD DOC ATTACHMENT ONLY.
NO OTHER DOCUMENT FORMATS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
Make sure to use the “VIDEO CONCERT REPORT TERMS & DEFINITIONS” page when you need to recall musical terms, definitions, and descriptions of ideas, concepts, instruments, music styles, etc.
This guide follows the general sequence of a concert event from beginning to end, starting with a description of the concert location (the first thing you would notice if you were in physical attendance and not watching a video), and finishing with your opinion of the performer and performance.
Identify all of the music concepts and ideas learned in class that apply to the video you are writing about as they happen or are used during the concert. See the “VIDEO CONCERT REPORT TERMS & DEFINITIONS” if you’re stuck for a descriptive term or use the best term you can think of, but be descriptive! Keep in mind the terms below:
Rhythm, pitch, monophony, polyphony, heterophony, texture, form, ostinato, interlocking, call and response, vocables, clave, raga, tala, drone, improvisation, etc.
FOLLOW THIS SEQUENCE AS CLOSELY AS POSSIBLE WRITE WRITING YOUR REPORT
#1. Describe the setting of the performance:
Note the geographical location (Philadelphia PA USA, for example)
Describe type of performance space indoor/outdoor, traditional/modern
Describe the visual interior of the performance space
How does the performance space effect the sound of the music?
#2. Discuss the type of performance:
Is it instrumental, vocal, dance, or all three, etc.?
What musical genre or style or style (example: North Indian Sitar or New York Salsa)?
Who is/are the performer/performers?
How many featured performers are there in the performance?
How many songs were performed? Were the songs organized to move smoothly from one to the next?
Were there a variety of speeds and rhythms being sung or played or danced?
Were instruments were featured (solos, melodies, etc.)?
Were there moments where the music was simple and just one, two, or three people performing?
Describe that in detail.
Were there moments where the music was just sonically overwhelming?
Describe that in detail.
#3. Discuss the various instruments used throughout the performance:
Name all of the instruments by category: Aerophones, Chordophones, etc.
Name all of the instruments by their individual names: trumpet, guitar, voice, congas, etc.
Discuss the musical role of the various instruments in the performance: accompaniment, soloing, etc.
#4. Discuss the groups (if applicable) and the performer’s individual performances:
Discuss how the performers play these instruments? What physical techniques are used?
This includes vocal artists and dancers….what are the specific physical demands of singing or dancing in that musical culture, style, etc?
#5. Discuss how all of the performers play with each other:
Are the performers required to listen closely to each other to fulfill their role in the overall performance?
Do the performer’s play precisely together or is there room for individual expression, interpretation, or nuance?
How do they communicate with each other during a performance (verbal, visual, played musical cues, are all possible)?
#6. Provide your opinion about the lead performer or group of featured performers:
Does the lead performer stand out from the others? If so in what way?
Musically? Visually? How? Provide details.
Do the featured performers work as an artistic unit or are they just taking turns as featured individuals?
USE WHAT YOU KNOW (You know more than you think.)
LISTEN INTENTLY & WATCH THE PERFORMER.
YOU ARE NOT RESTRICTED TO USING ONLY MUSICAL TERMS FROM THIS CLASS.....
but use clear descriptive language to communicate what you are experiencing. Remember, you are a Music Journalist.
