Lung tissue is very sensitive and therefore is easily irritated with environmental pollutants; including dust, mold, tobacco and smoke to name a few (Johnson, 2018). Pollutants such as these have the ability to cause short term and long-term consequences and affect respiratory function as well as cause respiratory illness. One example of a respiratory illness is Asthma; if not taken seriously and monitored, atelectasis could develop in addition to V/Q mismatch and respiratory failure. During an asthma attack, the airway becomes inflamed and causes bronchospasms which decrease the ability to exchange air efficiently (2018). Asthma is a respiratory issue that affects all ages but can be managed with proper medication and education. Exercise exacerbates the problem, but it can be triggered by the allergens mentioned above. With the use of antihistamines, anti-inflammatory medications and an action plan, asthma exacerbations can be prevented and managed.

As a nurse, it is our responsibility to provide education to our clients. Our message must be clear and concise. Priority must first go to how to prevent an asthma attack and overall health promotion. From there, instruction must be given regarding how to manage the attack and when to call 911 or their healthcare provider. Those suffering from asthma must be encouraged to exercise but must also understand this is a trigger so if necessary, clients must premedicate with albuterol 15-20min prior (2018). Being aware of their surroundings and areas with high pollutants is important; and having a rescue inhaler on hand at all times is also very important.
