Prompt 1:

This experiment may be less of a theory with COVID-19 as many schools, universities and corporations are experimenting with virtual classrooms and a variety of modalities for self-directed learning. Although my students will be selected randomly, I have decided to put a few controls in place in my randomized controlled experiment. The instructor, the subject taught, the materials, and the assessments leveraged will be the same for each class test group.

Class 1, participants will be required to attend class daily, Class 2 attendance will not be taken, and Class 3 will not have an option to attend class. However, all participants will be required to complete testing in person for the experiment. To decrease the possibility of students selecting based on their known work habits and possible unconscious bias from educators, I recommend that details of the experiment are not shared with

participants and attendance guidelines are not shared until day one of the class.

I can’t help but think we are all going through a bit of experiment right now and wonder how many companies may revisit their work from home policies and how many schools may experiment with more online modalities post COVID. Many companies will be looking at production levels, associate morale, savings in real estate, and other measurements to determine what the future work state will be. I anticipate the world we live in will look very different in the future.

Prompt 2:

One method to to see if attending class improves student learning is by breaking the class into groups. One group would attend class, complete class assignments, and participate in class discussions, the next group would do attend online courses, complete assignments, and participate in class discussions. A third group could be formed for students that learn at a self pace. They would simply be given the course material, assignments, and deadlines. The student's ability to learn in each of these environments can be done by administering weekly quizzes, knowledge based test, and discussion questions to gage the learning process. The instructor could also ask for student feedback regarding the class structure, the course material, and what can be done differently to improve the process. An end of course survey could be sent to all students to access this measure.

Knowing that we all learn different, and what works for one may not work for another. This experiment should be done with students that are proficient in each learning environment. This will ensure that the results and feedback are accurate and the student and the learning environment is not being set up to fail.
