- In a theme analysis, you are writing about what you consider to be the main idea that
the director wanted you to take from this film. The theme must be stated as a complete sentence.
From there, explicate your thesis—explain how the theme works in the paper, and provide scenes which show the theme at work in the film.
- In the first sentence, use Standard literary practice and mention the director’s full name and the full title of the movie. You give a very brief plot summary, and you mention the characters that you will be using as examples, usually in the introduction.
- The first time you mention the character, you mention the actor who played the role.
For example:
- Hercule Poirot, played by Kenneth Branagh exemplifies perfection.
- Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) exemplifies perfection.
- When you write about film or literature, you write in the present tense.
- Poirot investigates the claims of the other passengers.
- If you quote from the screenplay, you do not need to cite any dialogue because it will be
obvious that it comes from the movie.
