Research Paper

With 1,600 words of MLA-formatted text, compose an essay that uses primary and secondary research to advance a position, argue a point, and/or propose a solution to a problem. Your subject and thesis should relate in some way to the news: an exploration into some aspect of how/why news is changing, what it is or should be, or simply a subject that is being or has recently been discussed, in the news. Whatever you choose, your subject should revolve around an issue that is of personal relevance, importance, or interest to you, but it should also be at least somewhat relevant, important, and interesting to your peers: something newsworthy. The resulting argument should focus on a question that is of broadly human interest, something of social import, though this doesn't mean it has to be a “big” issue, so long as it's relevant to us as members of society, a particular community, or other group.

Using a minimum of five credible and academically appropriate sources, your argument should not only advance and support its thesis, but should strive to participate in the overall conversation surrounding the subject – offering a new perspective, a slightly different set of priorities, or perhaps making a connection that you feel to be overlooked. The research paper should demonstrate your understanding not only of the subject, but also your own rhetorical situation related to it, the broader conversation surrounding the topic, and of the nature of argumentation itself, including a clear understanding of your rhetorical purpose and the needs/expectations of an academic audience.
