Discuss the impact of radon exposure on public health. What do you feel is the role of federal, state, and local health agencies in relation to this environmental exposure? Please make sure to discuss whether or not you feel radon exposure is being effectively regulated and the population is adequately protected in the United States from this natural exposure, and why.

Radon is a toxic gas that is created from the decay of radium and uranium. Inquires about this toxic gas were raised when miners continuously were diagnosed with lung cancer.  Since this discovery, Radon is now a Class A carcinogen which means people that have been exposed to the gas will not see symptoms immediately but more so down the road five to twenty years from their encounter.  Radon impacts public health because it cannot be detected by any of the five senses, so it is essential that public health officials set regulations for federal, state and local agencies to enforce.  On the federal side, the Environmental Protection Agency is the one that sets the regulations for how much radon gas is considered safe, if at all, and what to do if it is detected.  Next, the state health agencies monitor what areas of the state have been infected by radon gas in the past and try to prevent it from coming back by continuously testing for traces of it.  Lastly, local agencies require homeowners to have their residences tested for the gas being present in their homes every so often and if it is, then certified officials will be able to take care of it.  I believe Radon is being regulated effectively and the population in the United States is protected from this toxic gas to the best of their abilities because there are so many regulations and guidelines set to help eliminate any Radon exposures from going undetected.
