1.After reviewing pages 110-113 of the pocket manual (specifically the info on paraphrasing) and this page - Paraphrasing, please complete the following paraphrasing exercise:

Using the same article you conducted your Annotated Reading 5 assignment on (or I suppose either, your choice), please identify 3 quotes/passages from the text, and provide your unique paraphrase below it. Using the following format:

1. Quote: "Here is the original passage from the article with the exact wording."

Paraphrase: Create a unique restatement of the idea by changing the wording and structure of the sentence.

Each quote should be 2-3 sentences in length, and your paraphrase should maintain a similar length. This is an opportunity to practice your paraphrasing skill; please follow up with any questions you have.

These responses are open-ended so you can write about whatever you want or need to, but

earnest effort to produce an academic examination of the text or material is expected. For

example, your discussion prep could detail your reaction to the text, address some

problematic or puzzling aspect of the text, discuss an aspect of the reading that you found

particularly interesting, and/or simply relate the reading to previous information or

experiences you have encountered. If, after the reading, you were left with more questions

than answers, then discuss those – maybe try searching out additional information from

other texts or online.

Remember, your audience for these is this particular class, not just the instructor. We will

share these reading responses in class sometimes. As a writer, you can assume that we

have read the material so you do not necessarily need to summarize the work for us (or

provide unnecessary definitions), but if it helps your response, then include them. While the

audience knows the material, we don't know your take on it. So, one of your chief

responsibilities is to explain your thinking to us clearly, concisely, and convincingly (i.e. use

examples, be as brief as possible without compromising the integrity of your thoughts, and

use multiple quotes/examples from the reading(s) to strengthen or clarify your position).
