Industries adopt waste minimization techniques that lead to significant resource savings and cost reductions. This assignment emphasizes the basic concept of sustainability within business.

You can take examples from your own work experiences or from other real-life market situations. • Diversification, if any, into new products
    • Your rationale for how this company still made profits

STUDENT RESPONSE:

Dell believes that zero waste producing, consuming and recycling without throwing anything away  is an ethical, cost-efficient and visionary approach that all manufacturers should employ. And, while absolute zero waste may not be possible short-term, their zero waste guiding principles and the strategies they execute to follow them are helping them to get closer and closer to a truly waste-free process, and in their manufacturing operations, they regularly divert more than 97% of materials from landfilling. Their teams take pride in reducing waste – it is inefficient and represents a lost opportunity with resources. This approach is in line with our ongoing efforts to transition to a circular economy, (Zero-waste manufacturing, 2018).

One way that Dell minimizes waste is by producing products that are easily repaired, such as, their lap tops and desk-based computers. By making their products easily repairable, the consumer is more inclined to bring their appliances in for repair as supposed to simply throwing them in the garbage. Dell believes in proactively aiming for waste avoidance upstream via their supply chain and downstream via their customers and beyond for minimal environmental impact, (Zero-waste manufacturing, 2018).

Dell has implemented many sustainable methods. One of the methods used was the Dell Ecovative Design for Packaging. This method encumbered a mushroom packaging that reduces the total amount of solid waste of consumption of fossil fuels. The package is made from completely compostable material and only takes one-tenth the total time to produce, unlike Styrofoam, (Dell Sustainability, 2011).

In 2013 it was reported that Dell planned to diversify way from computers; (Dell to diversify away from computers, 2013) however, as of 2016 Dell’s PC business continued to grow despite their need to diversify. Dell wants to pursue inorganic and organic investment with the limitations and scrutiny associated with operating as a public company,(Amid need to diversify, Dell's PC business continues to grow, 2016).

Dell continues to increase their growth, especially with the EMC merger in 2016. That merger makes Dell and EMC the world’s largest privately controlled tech company, (Historic Dell and EMC Merger Complete; Forms World’s Largest Privately-Controlled Tech Company, 2016).

(Dell Technologies Reports Fiscal Year 2017 Fourth Quarter and Full Year Financial Results, 2017)

I feel that Dell has continue to make a profit because they have not diversified from what their brand name is associated with (computers and laptops) and digital technology. When Dell merged with EMC, it solidified their position in the digital tech industry.
