Select ONE children's book and ONE literacyskill (comprehension or vocabulary) that you want to teach within that children's book and prepare and submit a lesson plan.

Lesson Plan FORMAT

 *Indicate grade, content area, and genre of children's book.

Objectives: (What skill will the students learn that focuses on two of the components of reading, comprehension and/or vocabulary?) Be sure that your objective provides that you select ONE children's book and ONE literacy skill (comprehension or vocabulary) that you want to teach within that children's book.

CC & ILA Standards:  (How are the objectives that the students will learn align with the MS Dept. of Education Curriculum Framework/Common Core Standards and the International Literacy Association’s Standards). Be sure to clearly identify and state the standards. (Emphasis on components of reading)

Purpose of Lesson/Skills: (What expectations do you have of the student learners? This should be represented in the curriculum framework as the skills to be taught and learned...Also include the genre of the selected children's book.

Anticipatory Set: (What is the “Hook” or focus of the lesson that excites or motivates students to want to learn the material being presented and connects this lesson to a previous lesson?) What before instructional techniques will be incorporated here?

Input/Modeling, or Teaching/Instructional Process: What are the instructional strategies the teacher will use to provide input, model, and check for understanding? Guided Practice and Monitoring: What are the instructional strategies and questioning techniques the teacher will use to monitor student learning? Monitoring can occur orally, in writing, task performance, group reports, games, simulations, cooperative groups, etc. to ensure students are learning and lesson objectives are being met? What during instructional techniques will be incorporated here? Determine the instructional aides & materials to be used.

Independent Practice: What are students required to complete on their own or in small groups or pairs to demonstrate mastery, to reinforce and extend learning? What during instructional techniques will be incorporated here?

Closure: What actions or techniques will the teacher employ to help students make sense out of what has been taught, to help form a coherent picture, to eliminate confusion and to reinforce major points to be learned?  What after instructional techniques will be incorporated here?

Assessment:  What assessment techniques will be used for students to demonstrate individual mastery of the objectives taught?  Decide the appropriate measures to use to determine students’ mastery.
