interviewing

Describe in 1-2 pages a qualitative research project on a topic that you would like to investigate using intensive interviews. Usually, such a design would be based on a review of existing literature. We don’t have the time for that, so base your topic on ideas you’ve covered previously in sociology classes. It’s fine if you choose the same topic as your observation project. Doing so would actually illustrate how observation and interviews create different ways of understanding a phenomenon.

NOTE: In your interviews, you should not to ask people about illegal conduct, and you cannot do research on persons who cannot give informed consent meaning children

The description should include:

  • a paragraph explaining your topic and why it is relevant sociologically
  • a paragraph on sampling (which sampling procedure are you using? how will you select people to interview? how will you recruit participants?)
  • a paragraph describing the questions that you will ask and the setting for the interview
  • a paragraph reflecting on your relationship to the participants and if and how your own experiences may shape your interviews

Include a copy of the interview guide you will use in your interviews (including a recruitment/informed consent statement). You will eventually have to conduct 30 minutes of interviews. This time can be broken up however you like—you can do 1 30-minute interview, 2 15-minute interviews, etc.

I will provide you feedback on these submissions before you go and collect your data. Do not collect data before I review and approve the interview topic and script.

Also, this step of the project will be graded as homework. To grade it, I have provided a rubric. This homework grade will give you an idea of how well you are progressing with the project at this stage.
