Improving the Reliability of Qualitative Research

Quantitative researchers have various tools to evaluate the reliability of their research instruments, such as Cronbach’s alpha. In qualitative research, the researcher serves as the primary research instrument, and qualitative researchers face the challenge of establishing their own credibility as a research instrument, as well as evaluating the reliability of other researchers' results.

Consider the main elements of measurement reliability: accuracy and precision.  Answer each of the following questions in your post:

  • What do accuracy and precision mean in the context of qualitative research? (1 para)
  • As a qualitative researcher, how would you establish and improve your reliability in each of these areas? (1 para)
  • What are three specific signs that you would look for to evaluate these elements of reliability in another qualitative researcher? (2 para)
