Unit 7 Assignment 2: NTAS and HSAS
The Reading in this unit discusses the Homeland Security Advisory System (HSAS) created by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 3. The HSAS was a threat-based color-coded system used to communicate to the American public and safety officials the status of the terrorist threat to the nation or parts of the nation. This system was replaced with the National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) after the publication of the course textbook. This system is described as a more effective way to communicate information about terrorist threats by providing timely, detailed information to the public.
The intent of this Assignment is to emphasize the fact that disaster policy, emergency management, and homeland security issues are always changing.
For this Assignment, write a minimum 750-word essay that:
- Describes the NTAS threat level as of the start of this unit. If a threat level is not designated, pick either Imminent Threat Alert or Elevated Threat Alert and describe the threat level.
- Discusses what the threat level means to the public and if there is anything the public can do.
- Discusses what the threat level means to the emergency responders and the civil military.
- States whether you think the NTAS is an improvement from the previous HSAS.
