What You Need to Know

As we discuss gender and sexuality, it is helpful to keep in mind the sociological definitions of these terms.

  • Gender refers to the characteristics we use to describe males and females, as well as the way in which males and females embody these characteristics in their behaviors and interactions.
  • A person's sexual orientation is the gender to which they are sexually attracted, while an individual’s sexual identity refers to how that person would classify their own sexuality (for example, as "straight" or as "bisexual").

For background information on gender and sexuality, read:

  • Chapter 11 (pages 392–426) and Chapter 12 (pages 430–461) in your text, Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Class.
