Discussion Questions

DB1: Part One:  Read Chapter 1. Paying close attention to "Competency Requirements for Career Counselors", discuss what you think are the most important competencies for your current or future profession. In your post include what skills you think you might need to improve upon and specific areas you will want to focus on during the semester.

Db2: Part One: Review the PowerPoint Slides under Module 2 and make special note of John Holland's Theory of Occupational Choice. Post a discussion describing your understanding of Holland's theory and how you see its application to your own career and occupational choices.

DB4: Part Two:  Discuss your experience and career developmental process as it relates to Super's theory. What parts of the theory do you agree or disagree with? How does his theory relate to Erickson's developmental stages?   

DB5: Read the PowerPoint slides under Module 4 Resources. Read Chapter 7 of the text. What are three main areas that you will need to consider when working with clients from different cultures and backgrounds in career counseling? 

Read Chapter 9 of the text and review the Power Point presentation under Module 5. Answer the  What techniques would you find most effective with clients and why?  Which of the discussed techniques/interventions would you find most challenging, and why?

DB6: Part One: Read the Power Point Presentation under Module 6 Resources. Read Chapter 10 of the text. Read the Power Point Presentation under Module 6 Resources.  Create a short scenario of you reviewing the result of a career assessment with a client using the step-by-step layout on pages 205-209. Part Two:  In your chapter on managing career information, your textbook gives numerous online sources and types of information for those seeking career help. Which of those sources would you likely use to help yourself or your clients progress toward satisfying employment? Why would you choose that type or source of information?

DB7: Read chapters 12-14 of the text. For each school age group, discuss 1) The overall goals of career development, 2) The main challenges to career development. and 3) The most effective interventions in working with students.

DB8: Read Chapter 15 and 16 of the text. Discuss the overall goals of career development for college age/emerging adults, then answer the following questions. 1) What do you think are the main challenges to career development for college age/emerging adults? What might be the most effective interventions for this age group? How does this differ from the challenges and effective interventions for adults who are looking for progression in their careers?
