This unit explores chapter 7 AND also has us drawing from our knowledge in the first two units in order to critique Apocalypse Now and the companion doc, Hearts of Darkness.

WEEK ONE QUESTIONS

Orson Wells was knows as the "Ultimate Auteur." Remember, that term was coined by the French critic Bazin and is basically a filmmaker whose personal influence and artistic control over a movie are so great that the filmmaker is regarded as the author of the movie. Truffaut was an Auteur and though didn't aspire to the highly stylized shots of Citizen Kane, Truffaut did appreciate his innovation, deep focus shots, and long takes. Now, we have been introduced to Francis Copolla. (re)watch the opening scenes of Apocalypse Now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntPHFVWDIqM What in those scenes hints at influences of Welles and Truffaut, and could Copolla be considered an Auteur? Support your answer with details from the films and draw from the vocabulary you have learned. Please post ASAP since this DB was created a little late.

WEEK 2 QUESTION

Let's focus on Apocalypse Now this week. Now, remember, you don't have to love or hate the movie. We aren't talking about that. But we do have excellent tools to justify how we feel about the film. I want you to think back to Chapter 3, specifically page 83, Mise-en-scene. Pick two specific scenes in Apocalypse Now and answer all the questions on page 83 in a post (or you can split it up). Be prepared to present your scene in class because I will call on you and we will watch the scene together!
