The expansion of human populations is often linked to environmental disasters and the emergence of human disease. An understanding of the issues associated with man's interaction with the environment is crucial to managing environmentally linked diseases. Schaeffer agrees with Means in that “the plastic culture—modern man, the mechanistic worldview in university textbooks and in practice, the total threat of the machine, the establishment technology, the bourgeois upper middle-class—is poor in its sensitivity to nature.1”
