Main Discussion Post + Responses to two attached Posts.

Topic: Several factors, both internal and external, impact a company’s stock price and the subsequent perceived valuation of a company. Sometimes that perceived value matches that of the financial statements, and other times it is vastly different. Therefore, discuss the factors that lead to a valuation of a company’s worth compared to that of the financial statements and how company executives create the most value for all stakeholders.

Suggestions:

Here are a few general notes on the DBs:

Substantive means, "with substance." Avoid filling your posts with writing that does not add anything to the discussion.

Be clear, concise, and to the point. 300 words is the guideline, quality over quantity.

Find your own references.  Do not just use the same references that a person who posted before you found.

Avoid quoting from the textbook since this does not add to the discussion (since all of you are reading the same information).

If you paraphrase, be certain the reader can decipher what is your original thought versus what you are borrowing and use proper citations (APA format required)

Avoid the use of excessive quotes and long quotations.

Do not use Wikipedia as a reference for academic purposes.

Remember to incorporate the biblical/Christian worldview in your posts.  Integrate this input rather than simply quoting a verse at the end of the post.

Tips from Instructor:

The internal users of the financial statements are normally those managers who are responsible for managing certain areas of the operations.    We in accounting would develop internal management reports (same financial information) that are structured different so that the financials are more user-friendly to internal management.  Managerial Accountants are the individuals who provide internal financial information to internal management.  Their objective is to add value to the organization by pursuing the following objectives:

  1. Providing information for decision making and planning, and proactively participating as part of the management team.
  2. Assisting managers in directing and controlling operational activities.

External users of financial statements are those users such as stockholders, lenders, investment analyst on Wall Street and government agencies.

In an efficient market, all we can rationally expect is a return that is sufficient on average to compensate for the time value of money and the risks we bear.  Distinguish between the three types of market efficiency. Weak form efficiency says that market prices reflect all historical information. Semi-strong form efficiency says that market prices reflect all publicly available information. Strong form efficiency says that market prices reflect all information, both public and private.

Most financial economists assume that investors are rational, while some researchers believe that the answers to some puzzles lie in behavioral psychology. It may still be too early to say how far behavioral finance scholars can help to sort out some of the puzzles
