students response

“Grievance procedures outline the steps to be taken by employees in appealing any management action they believe violates the union contract and/or corporate procedures.  Grievance procedures are used not only to appeal disciplinary actions but also to resolve matters concerning contract interpretation.” (Rue, Ibrahim, & Byars, 2016)  In my organization we have two different unions, and recently I have had some exposure to grievance meetings.  In most cases, the grievance that are presented to human resources have to do with disciplinary action an employee as received.  The employee will seek the advice of their union steward, if the union steward feels the disciplinary action was inappropriate, they will call a grievance meeting with human resources.  During the meeting, the union steward will review their grievance and suggest a resolution, then human resources will respond.  After human resources investigates the allegations a decision is made.  In many of the grievances the employee’s supervisor did not follow the appropriate process steps and ultimately the disciplinary is dismissed or lowered a step, for example from a written warning to a verbal.
