The Assignment

Your assignment is to write a letter to your instructor and classmates – a letter that narrates and reflects on what you've learned and how well you’ve performed in ENGL 1010.  Your letter should include a clear overall assessment of your work and of your learning this semester, as well as ample evidence to support that assessment.

You may comment on your learning and your performance in terms of any of the following:

  • yourself as a writer (or as a student, reader, collaborator, whatever)

where you are as a writer now compared to where you’ve been, and where you want to be in the future

your writing habits

your attitude toward writing

your overall strengths and weaknesses as a writer

your experiences with writing and technology

your confidence level as a writer

specific elements of writing (e.g., thesis statements, introductions, analysis, etc.)

your experiences with peer review

the genre of narrative writing (our Project #1 focus)

the genre of textual response writing (our Project #2 focus)

the genre of research writing and social issues (our Project #3 focus)

Be sure to provide specific support/evidence for your assertions.  (See “Expectations for Sources” below.)

Goals of the Assignment

  • To help you reflect on and assess your work this semester

To give you further practice in producing a text appropriate for a particular audience and purpose

Audience

Your audience for this letter is your classmates and instructor. Make each decision about content and tone with your audience in mind. Format and Design

The format and design are up to you. You can choose the line-spacing and font that work best for your purpose and audience.  You can be traditional (for instance, laying out your paper in MLA format), or you can be creative.

Process

  • Completing prewriting and planning activities for your draft
  • Drafting, revising, and editing your work

Expectations for Sources

For this assignment, you’ll need to include plenty of support for your assertions.  Your support should come from your own reflections about your experiences this semester, and also from your own writing.  In other words, you should quote from your own writing (both major projects and smaller weekly work) to provide evidence to back up your assertions about what you’ve learned and how well you’ve performed.
