NURS 371 Poster Presentation Guidelines 1

WIDENER UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF NURSING

NURS 371 EVIDENCE BASED NURSING PRACTICE & RESEARCH

POSTER PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

1. Poster Presentation: The poster presentation must be completed by, and presented on, the assigned Poster Day in order to receive a grade for this assignment. Exceptions will be made only in exceptional or emergency circumstances (formal written documentation of such circumstances is required). Students must create their poster themselves. Any student found to have had the poster done professionally or by another person will receive a grade of zero for this assignment.

NOTE: This project is to be done individually.

2. Identify a nursing practice problem, an aspect of nursing practice, or a nursing intervention that is of particular interest to you. It must be within the jurisdiction of nursing, i.e., an area where nursing authority may be exercised. Where it borders on an area of medical practice, nursing must have meaningful collaborative participation in practice.

3. At a minimum, EBP/research posters should include the following sections:

a. Title, Student Name, Widener University

b. Abstract (150-250 words max)

c. Introduction / Background (Keep it brief!)

d. Clinical Issue: Identify clinical issue, significance & and PICO(T) question

e. Search Process: brief – databases & keywords used

f. Critical Appraisal of Evidence: brief! Identify and synthesize key findings from 3 research articles related to your topic (and PICO(T) question) that have been critically appraised and evaluated for a potential change in nursing practice (* articles must be from peer-reviewed journals & ideally published within the past 5-7 years [unless it is a seminal work on the topic]).

g. Summary of Practice Recommendations: summarize the key practice changes that are recommended based on your findings.

h. Conclusion: Provide a few sentences concluding your topic & findings.

i. References: must be in APA format

4. Posters should be developed using an electronic scientific poster template. Free templates using PowerPoint can be found at MakeSigns.com (https://www.makesigns.com/SciPosters_Templates.aspx). The typical poster size for conferences is 48x36 (landscape). The design/layout you select is up to you and should be appropriate for the information that you plan to present.

5. Tips for creating EBP posters:

a. Keep words to a minimum! Should have fewer words in each section than your papers.

b. Include as much white space as possible.

c. Images, graphs, and charts are a great way to display information (instead of text).

d. Bullet points make information easier to read in a poster.

e. Font size in a 48x36 poster should be at least 24 points.

6. Students will exhibit &/or verbally present their posters on the Poster Day if being held

in person -OR- in person virtually if course is being held in an online platform (such as Zoom). Other nursing students and faculty may be invited to attend to view the posters so that a conference-like atmosphere is attained.

POSTER PRESENTATION GRADING CRITERIA Name of Student: Title of Poster: Poster will be graded according to the following guidelines: Total points = 40 points 1. Overall appearance and format of poster (2 points each for a total = 6 points)

A. Professional appearance. Title, student name & university are on poster. Font is

clear and readable at a distance of three feet. B. Electronic scientific poster template used. Text/descriptive material is kept to a

minimum. Diagrams, graphs, and/or tables (if used) are clear and enhance presentation. Spelling is accurate.

C. Overall neatness and arrangement. Poster does not appear overloaded with material and there is an indication of the sequence a reader might follow when examining the poster.

2. Professional Appearance and Manner (1 points each for a total = 3 points)

A. Presenter well-groomed and professional in their dress, demeanor, and behaviors. B. Presenter spoke in a professional manner. C. Arrived to presentation on time and remained throughout presentation time.

3. Poster Content (One point each for a total = 15 points)

A. Clinical Issue: (3 points) a. Identify the clinical issue/problem: Discuss the background and significance of

the clinical issue. Present a compelling overview of the relevance of the clinical issue; the PICOT question; the significance of the issue e.g. why is this question important?

b. Significance of the clinical issue/problem: Discuss why the clinical issue is significant to nursing, patient outcomes, and quality healthcare.

c. Search process: Describe the search strategies used to uncover the evidence. Include the keyword and databases used and number of articles used to answer your PICOT question. (May use screen shots of search history form databases).

B. Critical Appraisal of the Evidence: (8 points)

NURS 371 Poster Presentation Guidelines 5

This section is not about discussing each study individually. It is about comparing and contrasting the research studies. Evaluate the foundation of evidence (research) that influences the clinical issue. Discuss the overall strength of the evidence in terms of level of evidence, the validity, reliably and applicably of the evidence and the confidence to act on the evidence found. Use tables to enhance the differences and similarities of the evidence.

a. Statement of the research problem(s) or purpose, research question(s) or

hypotheses, study variable, study goals, objectives or aims. Where they related to the problem?

b. Literature reviews – did they provide a rationale and direction for the studies? c. Statement of the research design(s). Were they appropriate to the study?

Why or why not? d. Description of the sample(s), populations and setting. e. Brief description of the measurement methods used in each study. f. Brief description of procedure(s) (data collection and analysis). g. Discuss the results of the studies, accuracy, and interpretations of results. h. Discuss the strengths and limitations of the research presented.

C. Interpretation of findings: (4 points) Collectively discuss the findings.

a. What practice change is warranted? E.g. what does the evidence tell you to do? Findings that flow from the evidence not a restatement of the findings of the studies.

b. Statement of the study findings c. Statement of the significance of the findings for nursing and/or patient. d. Relevant ideas for future research or implementing findings in practice

discussed. Do the results improve practice? Describe how and why or why not this research can make a difference.

4. Verbal Presentation (2 points each for a total = 10 points)

A. Presenter demonstrated evidence of a good understanding of the studies being

presented. B. Presenter applied beginning knowledge of scientific research in discussion with

those viewing the poster in relation to any of the following possible questions: Ask 5 questions below.

1) How significant is this study in relation to nursing practice and why? 2) What is the conceptual/theoretical framework of the study and is it positioned

within the discipline of nursing or borrowed from another discipline? Explain. 3) What is the study variable/s, what type of variable/s is/are being studied, and

how do they relate to the study design?

NURS 371 Poster Presentation Guidelines - Updated Jan. 2021 6

4) How does the study build on previous research, or what knowledge gap is it designed to fill?

5) Does this investigator/s pose a research question or test a hypothesis/es and why?

6) Explain whether or not the procedures used to analyze the data were appropriate and why?

7) Explain whether or not the findings are clinically significant and why? 8) To what extent are the findings generalizable and why? 9) How are these findings applicable to nursing? 10) If a practice change is warranted what would it be and how would you go about

implementing it?

5. Abstract and References (2 points each = 6 points total)

A. Abstract of the poster: a brief single paragraph that is a comprehensive summary of the poster.

B. References available on back right side of poster, full citation in APA 6th edition format.

C. Articles available to review (clean copy of the articles).
