MLA Style information – please note that for Public Speaking – an “in-text documentation” is going to be an oral documentation. A documentation is simply telling an audience that you got the idea or information from an outside source.

a. Outlines must have an “in-text” (oral) documentation for each source used

b. Your oral documentation (what would be the “in-text” documentation) is never in parentheses. It is a phrase or sentence that is placed into your outline

EXAMPLE:

You want to provide an oral (in-text) documentation of some stats that you are including in your outline.

Your outline should look like this:

1. Puppy farms are all over the U.S.

a. According to the ASPCA

b. There are over 2,500 across all the states.

You would NOT do it this way:

1. Puppy farms are all over the U.S.

2. There are over 2,500 across all the states (ASPCA, 2018)

Why? Because your audience doesn’t hear the actual source. Only the reader of this outline will know the source of that statistic!
