I totally agree with the reflections presented in the video that politics has a large influence on work. While politics is mostly associated with negative effects, it also has its advantages especially to the people with the power because the more powerful group tends to have an upper hand when making decisions and during the allocation of resources, As a result, most people strive to be powerful at work. The best ways to assert power in the workplace is by performing well in tasks and having great relationships. High performance automatically attracts attention and influence. Therefore, an individual does not have to use office politics to gain power. Having good relationships is also as important and depends on an individual’s ability to build relationships and connect with other people. I experienced this kind of political behavior in a former work station whereby there were two departments that seemed to be competing. This type of behavior is referred to as empire building and resulted in negative results such as conflicts and reduced productivity due to a lot of focus being shifted to the competition rather than the organizational goals. Currently, I would rate my political skills at average because I still have a long way to go on learning how to connect with people. One of the political behaviors I have used the most is reciprocity. This is the practice of exchanging things with others for mutual benefit, especially privileges granted by one individual to another. The benefit of using this skill is that both parties involved benefit.
