Course Project: Applied Research Project

Objectives

Technical managers are often called upon to create white papers to describe current technology, or to support and promote their ideas and proposals. To exercise the skill set required to produce a quality white paper, each student is required to create a term research project covering an in-depth area of Enterprise Data Design, Administration, and/or Management. Some topic ideas include a new trend, a technology, a product, a standard, or a managerial/technical issue significant to a business. The project allows you to integrate, in-depth, the theories and topics within the enterprise data design, administration, and management discipline covered in this course. Think of this project as a research white paper you might submit to your manager to demonstrate your technical and managerial abilities.

Guidelines

The project specifics are as follows:

· It should be submitted in Week 7.

· It should be a Microsoft Word document.

· It should be between 10 and 15 pages in length, excluding the title page, table of contents, bibliography/references, and appendices.

· It should be written in the APA Style. There are several APA tutorial links in the the Web Resources section of the Course Resources page (available in the Introduction & Resources Module).

· Appropriate citations are required. All DeVry University policies are in effect, including the plagiarism policy.

· Any questions about this paper may be discussed in the Course Q & A Forum in the Introduction and Resources module.

Below is the key schedule for the applied research project. Click on each of the weekly links to access additional information regarding these components.

Actions Required

 1

Topic Selection  (Links to an external site.) : Class discussion and student investigation of applied research project topics.

 2

Submit an  Abstract  (Links to an external site.)  of your research project which identifies the project subject selection and project scope definition. The abstract is worth 20 points.

5

Submit a  Project Progress Report  (Links to an external site.)  consisting of your abstract from Week 2, an outline or table of contents showing the coverage and structure of your paper, and a bibliography. The Project Progress Report is worth 20 points. The purpose of the progress report is a checkpoint for issues on your topic, scope, and project progress.

7

Submit your Final Research Project Paper. The Final Research Project Paper is worth 210 points.

Feel free to contact me at any time during the course to informally discuss ideas, topics, issues, or concerns. I'm here to help! You may also submit a single early draft of the final paper for my informal feedback on how to improve your paper. I will return feedback, and then you will have the opportunity to update your paper and resubmit it. However, you must submit your draft during the first few days of Week 7 to get my informal feedback. Not submitting an early draft will not hurt your grade; you just won't get the benefit of my early feedback.

Grading Rubrics

Here are a few things to keep in mind when submitting your assignments:

· All assignments should be submitted as a Microsoft Word document.

· Any assignment that is submitted without your name will be deducted 5 points.

· The Final Paper should be between 10 and 15 pages in length, excluding the title page, TOC, references, and appendices. I will deduct 1 point for each page short of the 10 page requirement. The length of your paper can also affect your score on Subject Matter and Higher Order Thinking, as one cannot fully develop a topic in a short narrative.

· Plagiarism, Don't Do It! Use the APA Citing Tutorial in the Web Resources section of the Course Resources page (available in the Introduction & Resources Module) to learn how to properly cite your references. Points will be deducted for violating the 80/20 rule! Plagiarism will result in a '0' for any assignment where it is detected.

Here's how you can earn points for each phase of the research project.

Best Practices

The following are the best practices in preparing this paper.

· Discuss both the business and technical aspects of the topic.

· Include a summary/conclusion giving an overview of the topic covered and your viewpoints. I'm interested in what you think.

· Figures, graphs, diagrams, etc. are extremely helpful in clarifying technical material, improve the flow of the narrative, and add interest to your paper.

· Organization is worth 25 points. A Table of Contents and Section Headers help immensely in the organization of your paper, as well as allowing me to quickly assess how it is organized.

· Include a Header WITH your NAME on all assignments. Assignments without a name will lose 5 points!

· Remember, the objective of the project is to develop your skills and abilities to enhance your professional effectiveness. Please take full advantage of your term project and this course to invest in your future. The time and effort you spend on this project will earn more than simply a grade in this course; it will help support your professional development to attain your full potential and build core competencies you can then demonstrate at many professional levels.

Additional hints on preparing the best possible project.

1. Apply a three step process of writing... Plan, Write, and Complete.

2. Prepare an outline of your research paper before you go forward.

3. Complete a first draft and then go back to edit, evaluate, and make any changes required.
