Your task is to observe the rhetorical usage and devices in the language of a speech of your choice.

 - A rhetorical device uses words in a certain way to convey meaning or to persuade. It can also be a technique to evoke an emotion on the part of the reader or audience. 

  • Choose one speech (click here).  In addition to the original audio of the speeches, you will also find transcriptions beneath the audio player so that you can follow along as you hear some of the world's greatest speakers address political issues of the 1900s and 2000s. (Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan, Malcolm X, Barack Obama, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, JFK, Lyndon B. Johnson, Franklin Roosevelt)

You will submit a written presentation of your findings. Length: minimum 800 words.  You should also refer to the lecture given with this assignment (Lecture 2) as well as any resources you find on the internet or in books on how to critically analyze speech.  Click here for ideas concerning Rhetorical Analysis

  • Begin with an introduction - some background information on who is giving the speech, why they are giving the speech (what prompted such as speech - Historical event?), where it is being held, to whom it is addressed to etc.
  • Analyze the rhetorical devices used
  • Analyze how Ethos, Pathos and Logos are expressed
  • Choose some points from the "Basic Questions for Rhetorical Analysis" (click on the link above) to help guide your research and writing
