Unit 3 Individual Project Deliverable Length: 3-4 pages not including references Details: For your Individual Project assignment, you will compare and contrast a work of art in a specific classification (Renaissance or Gothic) appearing on a WEBSITE with a work of art in your TEXTBOOK of the same classification. You can choose either two Renaissance paintings, two Renaissance sculptures, or two Gothic Cathedrals to discuss (two works in total). You may not discuss works that you have already discussed in another assignment. 1. To begin your project, explore the following websites classifications for your individual essay. A. Visit the following Web sites to review Renaissance art. Links to these Web sites are available through the unit Resources List, in Course Materials. The Vatican Museums ArtLex – Earlier Renaissance Art ArtLex – Later Renaissance Art OR B. Visit these Web sites for Gothic Cathedrals. Links to these Web sites are available through the unit Resources List, in Course Materials. Chartres Cathedral A Digital Archive of Architecture – High Gothic Earthlore Gothic Dreams – Cathedral Architecture 2. Write the Individual Project (3–4 pages not including references): Using the terminology and concepts you are learning for evaluating art, including materials used, style, meaning, and symbolism, and any other aesthetic issues, compare and contrast ONE of the selected works from the selected websites classification with a DIFFERENT work of art of the same classification from your TEXTBOOK . For example, compare two paintings from the Renaissance period or two gothic cathedrals. Use the following instructions to construct your paper: For each of the works of art, describe and compare attributes of the works by following the guidelines below to structure your essay. 1. What is the FORM of the work? Is it a two-dimensional or three-dimensional work of art? What materials are used? What techniques or processes are used to create the artwork? What colors are used? Describe the use of line, shape, texture, value, color, and balance. 2. Does the work of art have SUBJECT MATTER? If so, what is literally depicted? Is the work of art REPRESENTATIONAL, ABSTRACT, or NONOBJECTIVE? 3. What is the CONTENT? What does it mean or represent? What is the artist's message? Is symbolism used? If so, what is the meaning? What is the context of the artwork? What is the function of the artwork? What traditional role of the artist is exemplified? 4. Explain how the works of art fit into the context of the time period. Keep in mind that only art works that fit into the period of Middle Ages - Renaissance (created between 1350–1520 CE) will be accepted. Note: You are required to comply with APA style format for internal citation and a reference list. Submitted Files: Submit Assignment Score: N/A Instructor Comments: Important things to know about Unit Three Assignments NOTE: It is always a good idea to attend the Live Chat sessions or review the recorded archive. I go over information relative to the unit as well as explain the assignments in detail. General things to know about all assignments: 1 Always read assignments carefully and thoroughly. (Please don’t lose points because you do not follow all instructions and/or do not include everything the assignment asks for.) Do not complete assignments based only on this announcement – you are responsible to follow the assignment as it is listed in the assignment itself. 2 All submissions, (both Discussion Board (DB) posts and Individual Projects (IP), in every unit), should include pictures of the artwork you discuss. There are instructions for how to include the images in your IPs and how to upload them to your DB posts in the Instructor Files at the bottom of this course home page. Don’t lose points because you didn’t include pictures in your submissions. (No images will cost 10 points in each assignment.) 3 Your Individual Projects need to be in APA format. I put a simple layout in the Instructor Files that shows what needs to be included on what pages. You lose 10 points each time if your IP submission is not in APA format. (While I am not a strict APA enforcer, your IPs should follow the simple layout in the Instructor Files.) 4 DO NOT CUT AND PASTE MATERIAL from the internet! Your instructor receives an Originality Verification (OV) report with every submission, (both IP and DB assignments), that shows all quoted material and exactly where it came from. You can check your assignments before you turn them in using the Originality Verification tool in the left menu field of this course home page. YOUR OV SCORE SHOULD NOT EXCEED 25%. (Assignments that exceed the 25% target may not receive credit.) 5 Pay attention to word or page count requirements. These are not arbitrary. When course development specifies a length it has been determined as the minimum to develop the level of exploration and critical thinking necessary to achieve the assignment objectives. (I always check lengths.) Unit 3:
