                                                                                                       Emerson’s Symbols
In “Self-Reliance”, Emerson writes “If I see a trait, my children will see it after me, and then in course of time all mankind” (38). His point is that beliefs have great staying power. We acquire them unconsciously at the stage where we are dependent on others for love. How do we hold onto this secure love and yet evolve into autonomous human beings who can take responsibility for our lives? For Emerson the issue is not dependence versus independence. The issue is to bridge the opposites by a symbolic attitude.
A symbol is an object that stands for an unknown or unconscious content. The benefit of a symbol is two fold. First, it allows the individual to be dependent and trusting. Second, it allows her to be independent and courageous in becoming who she really is. The result, an ethical individual, acts without fear on her own behalf or that of others truthfully and justly.
In “Self-Reliance” Emerson uses one major symbol. This is the symbol of the Divine which he names the “aboriginal Self” (37) Capitalized, the word Self is different from self with a lower case “s”. The lower case “s” is our personal story which may or may not relate to others. Self with a capital “S” is intuitive wisdom available to those who have a symbolic attitude. Emerson calls them “men and women who shall renovate life and our social state” (43). (235 words)
On my honor . . . (signature).
RUBRIC on the Syllabus Modified to include several changes: D = Same + writes the honor statement and signs it; C = Same + uses the form but not the content of my model; B = Same + balances the number of active verbs and “to be” verbs; A = Same.

This is the teachers example of "self-reliance" so something similar like this is expected, 3 paragraphs and 200-300 words max. PLEASE DO NOT PLAGIARIZE , ive already done one paper for him from homeworkmarket and I got a D cause they were to similar. Up to you if you want to do self-reliance but other options are also friendship and gift. IT HAS TO BE DONE BEFORE 10 AM EASTERN TIME ON 11/10/16!!!
