If you have problems contact the course examiner • Install VMplayer or VirtualBox (both can be found on the course DVD-ROM or course web site) onto your Linux system— by1. Change to the directory you want the Virtual machine to live. 2. If you are using VMplayer and your CDROM mount point is /media/cdrom, run the command: tar -zxvf //VMware/SysAdmin_2015.tgz 3. If you are using VirtualBox and your CDROM mount point is /media/cdrom, run the command: tar -zxvf /media/cdrom/VirtualBox/SysAdmin_2015.tgz • Browse the documentation for VMplayer or VirtualBox. • Unpack the Virtual Debian distribution from the course DVDROM onto your Linux distribution • Using VMplayer/VirtualBox start the Virtual Debian machine. Students using USQ Computer Labs. • VMplayer is already installed on the Lab. machines • Unpack the Virtual Debian distribution of DVD-ROM into the directory /home/Virtual/student — by 1. Change to the directory /home/Virtual/student. 2. Then run the command (replacing “username”): tar -zxvf /media/username/cdrom/VMware/SysAdmin_2015.tgz 3. Rename the directory SysAdmin_2015 to something you will recognise and is unique—your username for instance. If you don’t then another student that wishes to unpack the virtual machine will have difficulty— because of the name clash. • Browse the documentation for VMplayer. • Using VMplayer start the Virtual Debian machine. All Students • Log on to the Virtual Machine as root and as the sysadmin unprivileged user. • Familiarise yourself with the Unix command line. • Check that the Virtual Debian can access Flash Drives and the DVD-ROM drive. (read-up on the mount command) • To stop the Virtual Machine—use the command poweroff. Quitting from VMplayer/VirtualBox will either force the virtualisation software to take a snapshot...
