PART 1 – INDEPENDENT PROJECT A – CHAPTER 4

 

  

 

Please move carefully through this assignment, thinking about which statistical tool you need to use from your SPSS output to answer each question.

 

You have to read Chapter 4 in your textbook, materials under the Learning Modules and complete all exercises in order to complete this assignment.

 

 

 

Using “2004GSS.SAV”,    I will provide the data set under the Assignment tool. 
 

 

 recode the variable AGE into a new variable called AGE2 with categories for:

 

  • Teens

  • Twenties

  • Thirties, and so on.

  •  

    Be sure to include the new variable labels for the variable AGE2.

    Request a frequency chart for AGE2 and answer the following questions:

     

 

  1. How many respondents are in their forties?

     

  2. What percentage is under fifty?

     

  3. Which category has the fewest cases?

    Below is some very helpful advice on completing the RECODE procedures for variable AGE into AGE2.

     

     

 

  1. When you RECODE the AGE variable into AGE2, it is very important NOT to double count any of the original values of AGE.  First, you need to do a frequency distribution on the variable AGE so that you can examine all of the values of AGE and you will be able to identify the VALID VALUES (this means non-missing values) of AGE and make intelligent, thoughtful, choices for the categories to be created when you create AGE2.  I have the following suggestions.

 

 

 

      1. When you create the category for teens, your range should be from LOWEST thru 19, and you need to assign this category a value of 1. 

         

      2. For the category of twenties, your range should be 20 thru 29, and you need to assign this category a value of 2. 

         

         

      3. For the category of thirties, your range should be 30 thru 39, and you should assign this category a value of 3. 

         

         

      4. Continue with this logic until you have exhausted all the VALID (this means non-missing values) for the AGE variable. 

         

         

      5. The final category for this variable will be eighties.  Now you need to specify that all other values will be coded as SYSTEM MISSING by clicking the “All other values” button on the left hand side of the screen, clicking the “System-missing” button on the right hand side, and then clicking the ADD button. 

         

         

      6. Now check the display box to verify that you have created the categories that you need and click the CONTINUE button at the bottom of the screen to send you back to the RECODE display screen.  Once here, you need to click OK and AGE2 will be created. 

         

         

      7. You can find your variable by scrolling to the far right side of your data mix where you will see your newly created AGE2 variable.

         

    • Once you have successfully created AGE2, I want you to go through the assignment of defining the data by creating a VARIABLE LABEL, VALUE LABELS, and removing all of the decimals (since the decimals are not required for the analysis).  To do this you need to follow the instructions in Chapter 4 on p. 64.  The steps are:

       

      1. Click on the VARIABLE VIEW tab in the lower left hand corner of the screen displaying the GSS data set.  You will then see a screen displaying several rows and columns of information about each variable in your data set.  You need to find your newly created AGE2 variable.  It is the very last variable in the list of variables. 

      2. To eliminate the decimals in your newly created AGE2 variable, go to the column labeled decimals for AGE2 and click once.  You will see two arrows, one point up and one pointing down.  These arrows control the number of decimal places that will be displayed in the DATA VIEW.  Click on the down arrow until the number 0 is displayed.

      3. To add a VARIABLE LABEL, move to the column under LABELS and click.  Now you can type a label that makes sense to you such as “Age Categories”.

      4. To add VALUE LABELS, move to the column under VALUES and click once.  You will see a shaded box.  Click once on that shaded box and you will see a value labels box that has no information in it.  Move your mouse into the box adjacent to “Value” and enter a 1.  Then move your mouse to the box adjacent to “Value Labels” and enter “Teens”.  Then click the ADD button and you will see your VALUE LABEL appear in the display box. 

      5. Continue this process until you have entered the VALUE LABELS for all of your AGE2 age categories.  Once you have entered all of the VALUE LABELS, click CONTINUE, and then click OK at the bottom of the “Define Variable” box.

      6. You have now successfully defined all the values for your newly created AGE2 variable.

         

         

 

  1. After you complete this assignment I advise you to save the dataset in its current form as there is a good chance that we will use these recoded variables again in the class and you will avoid going through the exercise of recoding AGE into AGE2.
