Work-Life Balance

Work-life balance is one of the trickiest agendas in the life of any working being. The degree of performance of an individual is greatly dependent on his or her inner most self. The inner most self of an individual comprises of mind, body, emotion and spirit. Balancing these will ensure that an individual is able to cope competently within the work place. The only way to bring your whole self to the workplace is by ensuring that you maintain a healthy and steady mind. In addition to this, a person needs to be physically fit and well groomed. The combination of a health body and mind yields a supportive spirit and good emotions that continues a harmonious flow going at the workspace and workplace.

Every workplace is characterized by hurdles which can easily hinder the completeness of a person’s inner self. The organizational status from the global perspective of being multi-culture in this case plays a crucial unifying role in the life of an employee. As a manager of 71 Properties, positive  interaction with staff and clients and the public is paramount, as you represent the establishment and you never get the  2nd chance  to make a 1st impression. Culture in this case depicts as well as defines the norms, policies and procedures within any organization. In my case, trying to understand and address everyone’s need is usually not an easy task. The employees have their expectations and preferences which are understandably far different from those of others. It is hard to maintain an upright inner self when the organization culture does not allow for flexibility at work place. In addition to this, an inhibiting lack of coherent social structure within the organization is also a challenge in developing and sustaining the positive inner self of an employee, dependent on confidence, structure, grounded in trust and loyalty.

                                                             Emotional Labor

As a process evident in individual, emotional labor involves engaging the conscious of an individual in managing expressions and feelings. In the autoreactive role, as a manager or CEO, manners, compassion based on ego has proven that  being right has to concede to “listening” as a positive skill set as a tool  that  exhibits more strength that  your title. Every job in any organization has a set of rules assigned to roles, which also contain emotional requirements or obligations. Regulating one’s emotions is very important in an organization, considered as an interactive platform.

As a manager, the role of getting things done through people and by people is really challenging. More often than not, many managers will be victims of emotions in some circumstances.

When dealing with employees, it is possible to be emotional especially when you get a job well done or poorly done by an employee. However, the best managers are ranked according to their strength of dealing with such demonstrative emotions such as anger, depression, over-reaction and extreme happiness. This is because if uncontrolled, emotional defects can be hazardous to the life (spirit) of the team within an organization.

The role of a manager in one way or the other requires one to be socially awake and aware. Being socially conscious allows me as a manager to understand the emotion ratings and range of others. This is important because it really assist me to correctly develop a skill set that defines a strategy involving directing their efforts towards better emotion management. Just above the mark of social requirements, there are personal requirements. As a manager, leading a team requires that one possesses the right emotion controls to avoid unnecessary conflicts in the organization. Being optimistic, inquisitive, open minded and friendly are some of the personal attributes that should be part of the life of a manager like me.

Autonomy and Control at Work Place

Autonomy in this case refers to the level of freedom that an employee is given at workplace. As an employee and as a manager, autonomy has provided the supportive ground for the success of both the other employees and the entire organization too. In my case, autonomy has ensured the effectiveness of the responsibilities and authority given to me to not only set new standards, but to review those that proceeded my current role and status. It means that while at work place, some of crucial decisions are entirely my mandate. It feels very motivating to see that something at workplace has been entrusted to you.

The level of autonomy at my workplace is considerably high. Although, it is also important to acknowledge that too much of autonomy can be harmful to both an employee and the organization. The degree of autonomy subjected to me as a manager is valuable helping me aspire to set targets and benchmarks with yields that realize the full potential of the organization. Being able to control this autonomy is another obligation that dictates the effectiveness of authority and responsibility at the workplace. Autonomy has allowed me as a manager to understand how to manage the psychological demands of my employees.

However, in as much as autonomy is available, it has to be regularly checked and controlled. The aspect of control comes in handy in such a case to help avoid conflict of interests at work place. In my case, the organization has a well-defined set of policies and regulations that govern the conduct of everyone at the workplace. These policies and regulations act as tools to put a fast check on misuse of authority and responsibility. Balancing individual needs of both staff and clients in concert with those of the organization helps to make autonomy effective. In this sense, the intertwining of autonomy and control at my work place has resulted to high motivation to duty and quality of life.

                                                       Learning Goal Orientation

My goal orientation  structure consists  more along teaching and learning based skillsets, more than performance statistics. This is what is norm, usually exhibited in the way things are done in my docket. I am a person who will always want to learn new things in my environment. While at work place, I embrace the hands on opportunity of learning from others in real time. This actually occurs because learning is continuous especially at workplace. New situations also present themselves in different times in the organization. Internalizing and conceptualizing these happenings is very important. This discipline enables me to adapt quickly to new changes and also to prepare for uncertainties.

This has also enabled me to know how to improve my competence as a manager. Although I am consistently in the positional learning curve of orientation, as manager, I do not overlook the aspect of performance management. Every organization has to perform so as to compete effectively in the turbulent environment. As a manger I have a deep sense of better performance for the general organization and not necessarily individuals. I also evaluate my performance and that of the organization to see where improvement is needed. This has enabled me to streamline performance in my organization. In addition to this, I also value feedback to my employees. It is through this that they can improve in areas of their weaknesses as well as sustain areas that they are best at.

                                                            Job fit and Life Purpose

The purpose of my life is to lead a conscious life that values leadership, diversity and success. These form the basis upon which leadership is enshrined. Being a manager of such an organization is not a simple wake-up-to-achieve task. It requires the optimism of a healthy mind. With regard to this, my current job really fulfils in the first place what I needed to be.

A manager has to be a good leader so that whatever he/she does comes to succeed. This job prepares me to live a life that I anticipated before – getting things done by people, through people and with the people.

Seeing other people succeed is also important in both life and in such a role as a manager. This job has enabled me to learn, accept and influence the values of others both at work place and other spheres of life. Being a broad field, my job has helped me cultivate other values and virtues such as effective time management and networking. No one can make it alone in this life.

Because we all need others, it is important to learn how to get connected by people in various circles that can be of interest to you. Besides the soft values of life, my job has also enabled me to have a good living standard as the saying goes that work is part of life for it makes us who we are.

Attaining work-life balance is not an easy task. It requires adequate preparation and dedication. Taking a close examination of my work for instance, I have to make sure that my work is not flourishing at the expense of my entire life. Perhaps from the way the situation is now, it is important to acknowledge that I am about to realize and appreciate a total balance between my work and life. However, this completeness can only be realized if some changes are made, implemented and made a way of living.

To achieve this, I will have to put in place better time management mechanism. This will help reduce stress levels and time wastage. Poor time management provides a breeding ground for panic. This has an effect of making an individual always unsettled. Well managed time allows time for rest and other recreational activities which are essential in life. Delegation is also important for this case. This is an area that I will have to embrace so as to realize work-life balance.

Delegation authority and responsibility will allow me to concentrate on core business only while the rest is left for the rest. The beauty of this is that in the long-run, I will be able to get every piece of work sorted in time to avoid job piles ups. Delegating duties also encourages the other employees. As a result of this, they will be motivated at work thus reducing workplace stress. A harmonious work place environment promotes work-life balance.
