Type of Practice: Single Physician Medical Practice – operating for nine months

Situation: A staff member of the practice discussed HIV testing procedures with a patient in the waiting room, thereby disclosing personal health information (PHI) to others in the waiting room. The patient filed a privacy complaint. The compliant also cited computer screens displaying patient information being visible to individuals at the waiting room front desk. The physician is concerned about safeguards of patient information, impermissible uses of equipment containing patient information, and unlawful disclosure of patient information. The physician hired you to determine and implement the appropriate corrective action(s).

How would you advise the physician about security policies associated with private health information?

How should the practice prevent this for happening again?

Deliverable: Your response should be a 3 page paper, double-spaced, 12-pitch, New Times Roman. You should also have a cover page and reference page in addition to the 3 page paper. Your paper should include an introduction and conclusion. The paper should answer all three questions in detail, using information from the appropriate legislation and other relevant sources. Use the grading rubric to ensure you include all the required elements.

Provided a separate section of the paper which contained an outstanding summary of the information presented in the paper. Presented 2 or more appropriate conclusions regarding your recommendations.

Provided an introduction/overview but this section was lacking in content and/or did
not tell the reader what to expect (topic of the case study).

Summary and conclusions were weak. OR, the summary was poorly organized and/or
contained inappropriate information or opinion.

Introduction was missing and/or not relevant to the required topic for this case study.

Did not provide summary/conclusions for the paper and/or the summary/conclusion was not relevant to the required topic for the case study.
