Propose an alternative policy suggestion for one of the criminal justice policy development agencies to at least two colleagues.

The National Criminal Justice Association (NCJA) was created in 1971 and “works to promote a balanced approach to communities’ complex public safety and criminal and juvenile justice system problems” (www.ncja.org).  Additionally, the Board of Directors serve as a formal way of informing Congress of criminal and juvenile justice needs and what has been accomplished thus far (www.ncja.org).  Their mission statement states “Serves as a catalyst for the careful consideration and promotion of effective and efficient criminal and juvenile justice policies and practices”.  It’s a collaborative board that influences and makes changes to the criminal and juvenile justice systems.  Some of the challenges maybe if their opinion is biased, the associations seems to have a lot of power and influence over policy/law makers.

Also, created in 2002, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is the umbrella agency that houses 22 different federal departments such as: Customs and Boarder Protection (CBP), the Transportation Security Administration and the US Secret Service (USSS).

The mission of DHS has drastically changed since the attacks of 911 and so has funding for many of the smaller agencies.  DHS is well funded and has a mission statement most Americans probably like to hear.  They want to protect America by land, sea and air--their number one goal is to keep America safe (www.dhs.gov).
