Project Overview

VMWare Player

To complete this project, you will want to install Windows 7 into the VMWare Player. This will allow you to complete the installation in a "virtual environment" instead of overwriting your current operating system. The following documents will guide you through these steps:

  • Downloading Windows 7 from Dreamspark (.docx)
  • Installing VMWare Player (.docx)
  • Installing Windows 7 in the VMWare Player (.docx)

Assignment

The ABC Hospital is upgrading their version of Windows. As part of the upgrade, 100 new computers will be purchased. Your task is to prepare a standard installation and training documentation so that your new trainees can follow the documentation and assist in properly configuring each system. In your documentation you will walk the trainees through the Windows 7 installation process, as well as installing Windows updates, and configuring each system with specific users and groups, a defined folder structure, network address, printers, and group policies.

    1. The first component of this project is to take 6 screen shots while performing the installation. Use these screen shots to describe the step-by-step installation process to your trainees. Remember these are new trainees, so be as thorough as possible!
    2. For the second component of this project you will complete the setup process for Windows 7 by performing the following activities (remember to include screen shots for each activity!):
      1. Create user, ITStaff, with local administrator privileges.
      2. Password complexity should be set to a minimum of 8 characters and meet complexity requirements.
      3. A second user, HospitalStaff, with standard user privileges and the same password complexity.
      4. The computers will be set to static IP addresses. For the field test, use the specifications below:
        • IP Address: 192.168.2.153
        • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.1
        • Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1
        • DNS Server: 192.168.2.1
      5. Configure a network printer on TCPIP port 192.168.2.250 with a printer name of Admissions Printer.
      6. Configure a local printer that is shared as Admissions Color InkJet.
      7. Create the folder structure shown below.

    1. The hospital needs to display a HIPPA warning reminding employees of patient confidentiality requirements to all employees when they log on.
    2. Several teams need access to local printers which will be shared among the group. All users will need to access domain printers.
    3. Finally, prepare a maintenance plan to install Windows updates.

Deliverables

  • Installation presentation:
Starting from a clean system, you will install Windows. You will document the steps of your installation in a Word document using screen captures and text to sequentially document your procedures. Submit the Word document as evidence of your successful installation.
  • Training Documentation:
After completing the installation, you will document the following requirements in a Word document using screen captures and text to sequentially document your procedure. Submit the Word document as evidence of your successful configurations.
    1. The folder structure required and how to create it.
    2. How to add a new user with the specified permissions.
    3. How to add the user to the local administrator group.
    4. How to assign the specified password length.
    5. How to configure a PC with the necessary static IP address.
    6. How to set up and share a network printer.
    7. How to set up and share a local printer.
    8. How to create a logon message.
    9. How to install Windows updates.
  • Reflection Statment:
Prepare a reflection statement outlining how the knowledge and skills learned in this course will better prepare you for your future career.

Screen Capture for use in Documentation

In your documentation, you will need to capture dialog boxes and insert them into Word files. You should convert the captured files to .JPG format or your documentation will be too large to be easily copied, downloaded, etc.

To save a copy of a Windows dialog box and save it as a .JPG file:

  1. Display the dialog box.
  2. Open the Paint accessory.
  3. Copy it to the clipboard. PrtScr will copy the entire screen. ALT+PrtScr will copy just the current dialog box.
  4. Paste the dialog box into Paint.
  5. Use the Save As command to save the file as a .JPG file in a convenient folder.

To use a saved .JPG image in a Word document:

  1. Open the Word document.
  2. Click where you want the picture inserted. It is easiest to have the picture appear on its own line.
  3. Choose Insert, Picture, From File.
  4. Navigate to the folder in which your .JPG images are stored.
  5. Select the file and choose Insert.
  6. It is a good idea to save the Word file after each insertion.
