Soft Skills in Workplace Volunteering and Internships

 

In my workplace we frequently host internships to allow dental assisting students the opportunity to be mentored and learn in a live environment. The four soft skills I have chosen which are of most importance in internship are communication, adaptability, teamwork and collaboration, and conflict resolution.  

These skills go hand in hand with most roles in a work environment.

 

 

First and foremost, communication is important due to the repetition of people interaction and for a steady work flow. As an Intern I must be able to speak clearly and communicate precisely in all that I do. In addition, communication must be exemplified in guest interaction and to fellow team members in a way that is effective and efficient. We thrive in superior quality of service therefore, I must know what I am talking about of sell the values/ philosophy of the business.

 

Furthermore, adaptability is imperative since changes are constantly occurring in our environment.  We may assist in navigating the team to where they need to be however, we may need to waver away from the current flow or take a little extra time with a guest. Therefore, it is important for the intern to adapt to whatever the current situation may be.

 

Next, teamwork and collaboration is highly important because without this, we would fall apart. Everyone must be a step ahead and work as a team for the business to flow in properly and so we do not upset our guests or fellow team members.  Team members must always strive to go above and beyond in all that they do so they must collaborate on how they will achieve daily and long term goals.

 

Finally, conflict resolution is important; we frequently have issues which may need to be resolved. Whether it’s an upset guest or we are running behind schedule, the team (including the intern) must work together to resolve said issue. It is important interns are mentored on how to identify conflict or how to find solutions. I feel, in conflict resolution, you must have empathy for the circumstance and try your best to overcome the situation.  Interns must not be aloof, if they are, it could lead to negative interactions regarding conflicts.
