Technology has introduced a host of modern techniques into the contemporary crime scene investigation. We now have methods and techniques never dreamed of only twenty years ago. Yet we still have some of the antiquated methods that were the standards in crime scene search for many decades in the past.

 

1. In your opinion, should antiquated methods of using black powder to locate and recover fingerprints be abandoned in favor of some of these new technologies? 

2. Is there a place in modern forensics and crime scene technology for these older methodologies? 

3. Do they still have value for investigative purposes?

Answer the following two-part question. 

 

1. Discuss how a presumptive blood test utilizing phenolphthalein at a crime scene can be of use to a crime scene investigator. 

2. Can it give conclusive results that a substance is actually blood and nothing else?

Answer the following two-part question. 

In the case of Natalie Holloway, it was necessary for the Police in Aruba to search the local landfill for the possible disposal of her body. This posed significant problems and obstacles for the police. A homicide investigator from your agency advised you that a suspect in a homicide has just revealed that he had disposed of the victim’s body in the county landfill two months ago, and you are needed to establish a search of the landfill based upon this new information. The body is said to be contained in a large black plastic construction bag which was picked up from a dumpster behind a local grocery store. Your agency chief requests for you to brief him and to advise him of your general plan regarding this search.

2. The media is asking the chief questions regarding this pending search of the landfill. What are you going to advise that your chief regarding your search plans for the landfill?
