A mental disorder is a clinically significant behavioral or psychological syndrome or pattern that occurs in an individual and that is associated with present distress or disability or with a significantly increased risk of suffering death, pain, disability, or an important loss of freedom.” Some examples of mental disorder is anxiety disorder, mood disorders which includes depression, bipolar, eating disorders, personality disorders and PTSD. The mental disorder that was most interesting to learn about is Schizophrenia. “Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. People with schizophrenia may seem like they have lost touch with reality. Although schizophrenia is not as common as other mental disorders, the symptoms can be very disabling.” (Allen, 2014) Symptoms of schizophrenia usually start between ages 16 and 30. In rare cases, children have schizophrenia too. The symptoms of schizophrenia fall into three categories: positive, negative, and cognitive. : “Positive” symptoms are psychotic behaviors not generally seen in healthy people. People with positive symptoms may “lose touch” with some aspects of reality. An example of a positive symptom would be hallucinations. Negative” symptoms are associated with disruptions to normal emotions and behaviors. An example would be reduce speaking, and reduced feelings in every day life. : For some patients, the cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia are subtle, but for others, they are more severe and patients may notice changes in their memory or other aspects of thinking. Symptoms include trouble focusing and paying attention and problems with working memory. (Legg, 2016) There are two risk factors when developing this disorder. One is gene and environment and the other is different brain chemistry and structure. Because the causes of schizophrenia are still unknown, treatments focus on eliminating the symptoms of the disease. Treatments include anti- psychotics, psycho social treatment, Coordinated specialty care. Caring for and supporting a loved one with schizophrenia can be hard. It can be difficult to know how to respond to someone who makes strange or clearly false statements. It is important to understand that schizophrenia is a biological illness Get them treatment and encourage them to stay in treatment (Legg, 2016)
