Short Essay Response is completed by choosing one of the three provided options and fulfilling all listed requirements.

Ensure that you review the entire rubric to earn every possible point.

OPTION I

In a 275-300 word short essay, respond to the REQUIRED film/s or media this module, all of the following questions:

Ensure that you address required film/s or media as indicated on the media page (required film/media notes are brightly colored and in bold font).

  1. Paragraph One: What does the film contribute to the discussion of African American culture or history, and what aspect of African American culture or racial/racist ideology does lecture or film address (social, cultural, biological, historical, color-based, etc.)? In a paragraph of at least 4 sentences, respond to all questions.
  2. Paragraph Two: Provide 1-2 examples from a required video from this week that relate to our reading in some way - how does it support or conflict with one or more of the readings or the general subject matter that we are discussing? In a paragraph of at least 4 sentences, respond to all questions. 
  3. Final Paragraph/Sentences: What did you find most interesting about this week’s materials overall, and/or what did you learn? Respond in 1-4 sentences.

OR

OPTION II

In a 275-300 word short essay, respond to the podcast lecture for this module, answering all of the following questions:

  1. Paragraph One: What does the podcast lecture contribute to the discussion of African American culture or history, and what aspect of African American culture or racial/racist ideology does the lecture address (social, cultural, biological, historical, color-based, etc.)? In a paragraph of at least 4 sentences, respond to all questions.
  2. Paragraph Two: Provide 1-2 examples from the podcast lecture that relates to our reading in some way - how does it support or conflict with one or more of the readings or the general subject matter that we are discussing? In a paragraph of at least 4 sentences, respond to all questions.
  3. Final Paragraph/Sentences: What did you find most interesting about this week’s materials overall, and/or what did you learn? Respond in 1-4 sentences.

OR

OPTION III

In a 275-300 word short essay, respond to the primary document for this module, answering all of the following questions:

  1. Paragraph One: What does the primary document contribute to the discussion of African American history, and what aspect of African American culture or racial/racist ideology does primary document address (social, cultural, biological, historical, color-based, etc.)? In a paragraph of at least 4 sentences, respond to all questions.
  2. Paragraph Two: Provide 1-2 examples from the primary document that relates to the current chapter in some way - how does it support or conflict with one or more of the readings or the general subject matter that we are discussing? In a paragraph of at least 4 sentences, respond to all questions.
  3. Final Paragraph/Sentences: What did you find most interesting about this week’s materials overall, and/or what did you learn? Respond in 1-4 sentences. 

REQUIRED FORMATTING FOR ALL ESSAYS (OPTION I, II OR III):

Format your essay by completing the following:

 

  • Place any references on the same page (Please do not create a new page for references, unless it happens to fall that way).
  • Place your name and date at the top left of the page
  • Double space the entire document, use 1 inch margins (at all sides) 12-point traditional font
  • Adhere to word count expectations to avoid deductions (275-300 words).
  • Please do not use numbering/listing/Q&A style. Essay Style Required.
  • Sentences should be written in standard English.  Paragraphs should contain at least 4 sentences.
