Part III: Due August 25th 2014

Explain how the athlete would best train to increase their athletic performance for their chosen sport.

The student should address the following question in a 1 page report with reference.

The student describes how to best manipulate knowledge of aerobic and anaerobic systems to improve athletic performance for their athlete and sport.

Part IV: Due September 1st 2014

What level of protein, carbohydrate and fat is recommended for this athlete and sport? Discuss how each nutrient is utilized when the athlete is actively participating in the sport.

The student will prepare a 6 – 8 page paper (with references) to address this portion of the project answering the following questions:

1.    The student prescribes correct percentages of carbohydrate, protein and fat in the diet for the athlete and sport.

2.    The student correctly illustrates the steps in carbohydrate metabolism during athletic activity.

3.    The student describes the storage of carbohydrate in the athlete.

4.    The student correctly illustrates the steps in protein anabolism in the athlete and sport.

5.    The student correctly illustrates the steps of protein catabolism in the athlete and sport.

6.    The student describes the use of fat as an alternative energy source for athletes.

 

Part V: Due September 8th 2014

Describe the concept of nutrient loading. Should this athlete “load” up on any one nutrient? Yes or no?

Discuss which nutrient the athlete should load and why or discuss why the athlete should not nutrient load.

The student will prepare a 1 – 2 page paper, with reference, to meet the following criteria:

1.    The student describes nutrient loading.

2.    The student explains nutrient loading as it relates to their athlete and sport.

3.    The student successfully defends their plan regarding nutrient loading with their athlete.

Part VI: Due September 15th 2014

Complete a 2 day food plan for your athlete. Day 1 should be when the athlete is in training. Day 2 should be when the athlete is not in training. You should include a nutritional analysis of your two days to provide verification that your meal plans meet the dietary standards for your sport and athlete. These dietary analyses can be included in the report as an appendix to the report.

Your meal plan should include the use of any nutrition supplements you would recommend, if any

1. The student will create 2 meal plans based on the criteria above. DAY 1 and DAY 2 – include 3 meals and 3 snacks, or indicate why you are recommending your particular meal plan. You must include a dietary analysis of your 2 days of meal plans. This dietary analysis can be completed using software from other NS courses you have taken, or – you may use the governmental website: www.choosemyplate.gov Print out the analysis and include it as an appendix to this portion of the assignment. Label the training day as DAY 1 and Label the non-training day as DAY 2.

Your report should also meet the following criteria:

1.    The student successfully defends their plan regarding nutrient loading with their athlete.

2.    The student correctly implements (or does not implement) the supplements into their dietary plan.

3.    The student selects good sources of fat, carbs and proteins in their meal plan for their athlete and sport.

Part VII: Due September 21st 2014

Discuss at least 2 popular performance enhancing supplements or drugs. Indicate whether or not you would implement these supplements into the plan for your athlete. You must provide a defense for your choice. It is recommended that you back up your claims with scientific research.

Discuss regulations governing the use of commonly used performance enhancing supplements and drugs specifically related to your sport. Include in your discussion the pertinent national or world associations directly involved in supplement regulation. Discuss how you would counsel an athlete that is using a banned substance.

The student will write a 1 – 2 page paper, with reference, addressing the following criteria:

1.    The student describes the function and use of 2 popular performance enhancing supplements or drugs.

2.    The student cites at least 1 research study related to nutrition supplementation and athletic performance.

3.    The student discusses regulations governing performance enhancing supplements and drugs.

4.    The student identifies organizations related to supplement regulation.

5.    The student appropriately counsels an athlete that is using a banned substance.
