Read this chapter carefully and think about our look at the impact of geological discoveries about the earth in the 1800s last week. Then answer the following questions.
1. In your own words, what is 'deep time' and what are its implications for ideas about the future?
2. How might the idea of deep time have altered beliefs about Science and Religion in the late 1800s?
3. Roberts concludes (p. 203) that, "despite the irrefutable scientific evidence of vast antiquity, a sizeable minority of the Western world still rejects deep time in favor of a universe that has been in existence for only a few thousand years." In your opinion, why does this disagreement about the age of the Universe really matter?
