Practice 1: Topic Sentences

Directions for Part 1: One sentence in each of the following pairs is the topic sentence. The other sentence supports or develops the topic sentence. On your answer sheet, write out the letter of the topic sentence in your response.You do not need to rewrite the sentences on your answer sheet to complete this practice.

EXAMPLE:

b. People are buying their first cars at a younger age.

Practice 2: Unity

All sentences in a paragraph should support the main idea expressed in the topic sentence. When they do, the paragraph is said to have unity.

Directions for Practice 2: Each group contains a topic sentence followed by several other sentences. On your answer sheet, write S after the letter of the sentences that support the topic sentence and write N after the letter of the sentences that do not support it.You do not need rewritethe sentences on your answer sheet to complete this practice.

6. Topic sentence: Carnivals are a regular part of the American summertime.

a. Sponsored by parishes, fire departments, or schools, carnivals offer outdoor fun for both children and adults.

b. There are generally rides and games of chance.

d. Many young children, and some adults, enjoy riding the Merry-Go-Round.

 

7. Topic sentence: Indoor plants are both decorative and functional.

a. Many businesses use plants of various kinds to decorate their offices.

b. Oak trees offer needed shade protection for some types of shrubbery.

c. As well as adding beauty to the home and workplace, green plants release vital oxygen into the atmosphere.

d. With minimal effort and a flair for design, people can use plants to

transform rather drab rooms into light and airy places.

 

Practice 3: Coherence

The sentences in a paragraph should flow smoothly and logically to give the paragraph coherence. One way to achieve coherence is to put ideas in logical order.

Directions for Practice 3: The order of the sentences in each group is not logical. On your answer sheet, write the sentence letters in the order in which they should be arranged to form a coherent paragraph. Remember that the first sentence should be the topic sentence. You do not have to rewrite the sentences on your answer sheet to complete this practice.

EXAMPLE:

a. Next, make sure there is fresh water nearby before pitching the tent.

b. Finally, collect rocks to enclose the fire and sticks to start the fire for supper.

c. The construction of a comfortable campsite involves some important steps.

d. First, select a level place that is relatively free of underbrush so a fire can be

safely started.
