Essay 1 About People and Places

Background: Good writing takes time, effort, and purposeful scribbling. We’ve looked at example essays in our text, discussed the qualities of good writing, etc. Now it is time to find out how to incorporate the various elements of essays such as a clear introduction and thesis, body paragraphs with support and illustration and a closing paragraph.

This activity is designed to help you:

- reflect on a previous life experience

- discover the significance of the experience, person, or place

- look at a mix of details and ideas to discover their significance

- work through the writing process in its stages

- use prewriting strategies

Situation: As you sat in a hammock in your backyard, you suddenly realized that a particular event, person, or place from your life was begging to be reflected upon and written about. J

Directions: Select one of the following topics and write a 500-750 word essay about it. Use description, narration, and dialogue. You may also use flashback or foreshadowing and sensory details.

Topics:

  1. A place that holds a special childhood memory for you. Look back on its impact on you . Use sensory details – sight, taste, touch, feel, smell, and sounds.
  1. Your haven-  It could be a place, an activity, or a person. What did this sanctuary mean to you in the past? What does it mean to you now? Use sensory details – sight, taste, touch, feel, smell, and sounds.
  1. A person who had a significant impact on your life-  What were your preconceived ideas of this person? What event(s) changed your view of them? What impact did they have on your life?

MORE Directions: Your essay should show self-expression, be in narrative form, and show that you know how to work through the various phases of the writing process. Here are suggested steps:

- freewrite about your experience

- brainstorm, map, make lists

- establish the purpose/focus of the paper – analyze the assignment

- establish your focus

- write a rough draft of your essay

- revise – pay special attention to organization

- edit your paragraphs for grammar, mechanical, and spelling errors

-  Your essay must conform to the formatting guidelines provided in your syllabus.
