FINAL PAPER CRITERIA:

Here are some potential topics for your paper if you have not already chosen one:

Race

Art

Cultural Relativism

Africa Art

African Ritual

Aztec Ritual

Aztec Religion

Aztec Politics

Other Mesoamerican Culture/s

Native American Art

Native American Ritual

Native American Culture (in general)

Effects of Colonialism on any of the above

Slavery

Idea of "Progress"

Perspectives in History

Or, your paper topic could be about anthropology itself as anthropology is fraught with all of the same problems resulting from ethnocentric encounters with different cultures.

Or, you can make your paper on the Presentation of our Native American singers and the various talking points that the host made about Native American culture. Her comments reflected a cultural experience.

These above are just options, your paper could be a general discussion or one dealing with specific focus, you can choose to discuss one aspect of one culture or one aspect of the colonial experience, etc.

So, you are free to choose a topic of your choice, if you still cannot decide, haven't decided, or don't know what to choose, let me know as soon as possible and I will simply assign you a topic.

The criteria:

1) Compositional structure

2) 3 sources (at least)

3) "In text" citations

4) Bibliographic page

1) Compositional structure

    A) Introductionyour topic

In your introduction you should briefly mention the focus of your paper relating it to the class. Remember, the course is about Non-Western Culture and the Western Tradition. So, we have primarily been discussing the encounters between these, the motivating factors (such as resources and empire building/ and considering what that entailed). So, toward that end our anthropological lens has allowed us various tools to consider these above. We are not simply observing cultural interactions but also critically assessing pro, cons, and perhaps even proposing alternative processes. So make you topical discussion relevant in this way. The Introduction should work to do this, to contextualize your topic.

    B) Body of your paper, have your discussion of your talking points here. Talking points should have supporting statements. (example: British Colonialism had the effect of defining X country's character(supporting statement: by colonizing X country, people were compelled to speak english, and speaking english made the consumption of western goods more common.-just an example)

    C) Have a summarizing statement. In this summarizing statement do your best at synthesizing your analysis of your topic with regard to our anthropological tools (remember what these tools are). (example: According to how anthropology understands ethnocentrism, the historical encounter between the British and the Native Americans was a negative one based on one culture considering themselves superior to others. (supporting statement: this was observed in statements like, "all native americans are this".  -just an example. )

So, you paper will be graded on the following:

1) Compositional Structure: A) Introduction B) Body C) Concluding statement

I will be looking for:  does it have a contextualizing introduction, does it have a Body of talking points with supporting statements and does it have a summarizing concluding statement?

2) Must have at least three sources

I will be looking for at least three sources cited.

3) In text citation: Your paper Must have clear "in text citation". Are you citing all critical and informative statement that are not your own. When citing specific information that you did not do the direct research on, you must cite. You have all done really well with this so far, so remember this

I will be looking for "in text" citations on all statements that are not yours.

4) Bibliography. Your paper must follow the bibliographic example previously provided to you.

I will be looking for a correct bibliography or references page with the bibliographic style that I have provided you (not MLA).

Your paper will be graded on whether it contains the above. Also, please follow the same detailed paper format as before.

If anyone wishes for me to review an early draft of your paper before submitting the final one, I will be happy to do it provided that you do it sooner rather than later.

Lastly, again, please confirm your receipt of this e-mail by Monday. If you have any questions before then I will try to answer them as soon as possible.

Sincere regards and a Happy Thanksgiving guys.
