What is family life education and why do you feel it's important to today's American families?

According to Powell, Darling and Cassidy (2014), “Family life education is about working upstream” (p. 4). I do agree with this definition. I would say that family life education is about never giving up. It is about working hard for the things we believe, to be better and help others to be better too. Family life education is all about improving a person’s life. Family life education focuses on healthy family functioning, by preventing problems and finding solutions rather than waiting for things to be solved at its own speed, or when it is already too late.

A good example that clarify my position is:

After a long deployment many soldiers and their spouses grow apart from each other (x reason) or face some difficulties connecting as a family again. In this case, a family life educator can help with family and marriage enrichment.

After watching the video, I can say that it just reinforced what I though family life education was. The goal of family life education is to improve the quality of a person and family life. Family life education focuses on helping a family system to have a good and healthy functioning. It provides them with a preventive and educational approach to help them with any family issue (NCFR, 2016).

I believe Family life education is very important because it can change a person’s life. Our society is constantly dealing with many challenges. From divorce, stress, economy, unemployment, bullied kids, to parenting, nutrition, cohabitation etc.  I believe family life education can help families to be prepared for situations like these.

This task can be accomplished through educational programs, seminars, mentors, hand on experiences, counseling, workshops, family therapy ect. Teaching people how to deal with situations like these, how to approach them, and how to resolve them will definitely improve their lives. Unfortunately, no many people are reached by family life education in our society today.

PART 1

To me family life education is education about individuals who you connect with on a deep level; where there is communication, interpersonal relationships, and positive interaction. In today’s American family, there are too many busy parents that can’t seem to find more time for their children.
My son is five years old and his school has an event every year called the “Hamburger Farm”, where parents get to go on a field trip with their kids. We get to interact and spend time with our kids on a deeper level and in their everyday school environment with their friends. To me this school event educated me as a parent on where my child is physically, mentally and emotionally. “
Family life education (FLE) is any effort to strengthen family life through education or support, and can include anything from teaching about relationships in schools to providing a parent’s day out. The objective of all family life education is to enrich and improve the quality of individual and family life.” (Hawkins, 1989)

Part 2

Family life education is education you are receiving to better the life of your family. A lot of families are not privileged with lots of money and knowledge, so with family life education they can learn and then from there pass it on to their children. In today’s American families to many kids are watching TV and playing video games instead of getting their dose of vitamin C and interacting with kids or their parents and parents do not seem to mind.

Part 3

I feel like my part 1 and part 2 did have it similarities. This video kept my attention the whole time because it made me think of the way I am parenting and if I could be doing a better job, as well as how I see other parent’s parent. This weekend my children and I ran into a man that hit hard times, after I got my children in the car I went up to him and gave him two dollars. My curious five year old ask me why I gave him money and of course I explained, but what came out of his mouth next was shocking. My son said he would want to keep the money because he likes it. Of course this is not his fault at all because I think society with the help of my parenting has taught him this. We can’t help but teach our kids that money can buy so many things, but when you give it way that is just less for you to spend. This was an eye opener because I never thought to talk about these types of things. This video shows that we try the best we can but unless we are knowledgeable about something’s we can be missing out on key nutrition.
