Introduction

In order to ensure equality, economic theory suggests proper distribution of wealth and resources. But it hardly provides a basis for preferring any particular degree of equality in the distribution of income. Inequalities have also been observed in climbing the income ladder. A new study has portrait the income mobility in the United States. The study found that the upward mobility differs from place to place. It was observed that low income people in Atlanta found it difficult to rise into the middle class and beyond. Thus the study concluded that “odds of rising to another income level are notably low in certain cities, like Atlanta and Charlotte, and much higher in New York and Boston”.

Objectives

Income mobility has become one of the hottest topics in economics. Most of the Americans are of the concern that whether their standard of living will increase or not. Previous studies have shown that only a small percent of population escape from childhood poverty. But this number is not so low in other countries like Canada, Australia, France, etc. Previous studies have stated that Geography mattered much less for well-off children than for middle-class and poor children. This research paper deals with this problem of unequal upward income mobility and tries to find out the reasons behind this. This paper finds out whether education and family background plays key role in escaping from low income band and entering into middle income and beyond. Empirical studies have shown that the lower income mobility is found maximum within the blacks. This paper tries to test the hypothesis that race has no effect on disparity in income mobility.
